Leaving GNOME to dust is not KDE´s goal. KDE´s goal is to make the best desktop environment available, which has nothing to do with GNOME. If people use GNOME that´s OK, because it´s easier to go to KDE from GNOME than from Windows, for example.

KDE 3.0 will ship in February, because that´s when it will be ready. It will be released when it´s ready, not when it´s good according to the marketing people.

Also, GNOME is not adopting .NET. Ximian is developing Mono, indeed, but Mono is still not ready to be used to write applications. When it´s ready, the GNOME developers will decide if it will become a part of the platform or not. But chances are it won´t, if you read the mailing lists for the GNOME development. It won´t be a part of the platform just like Ximian´s GAL and GTKHTML libraries aren´t.
