Yes, but not everybody plans to change it's computer in the next year.

I agree that binary compatibility is a disaster on Linux. However, this is the price of always seeking for better and more easily understandable code. I think it's more a problem of the distro makers, unless you use any of the source based distributions.

If you want KDE to beat the others GUI you have to make it faster than them, among other things. Many people choose IceWM for this reason.
