How about jabber?
by Le Thanh Duong Olivier on Saturday 30/Apr/2005, @16:22
If you want to implement this via an Instant messenger you should probably look at the jabber protocol. It's a free protocol in xml that can be easly extended for such purpose. (www.jabber.org)

I know about Jabber and probably due to its extensible design it will be easy to implement service discovery on top of it. But it does not rule out other protocols - as long as they provide some kind of out-of-band channel it is fine.
