Well, the idea is based on suggestions of the KPDF/KGhostview developers if I remember correctly.
A viewer which combines all their features into one application is obviously not available yet.

Any bindings would have been OK. You have to let the students decide which one they want to write their application in.
My choice would have been Java as well.

Evince is available for Gnome

    It even supports mail. Evince is probably comparable to Konqueror as far as being a generic shell interface.
