The most successful standards often don't come from a commitee designing them, but from one individual effort that is so good or popular that everyone else copies it.

With the core of NX being free, if it proves worth it's hype and a lot of people start using it, it could quite easily become part of "X12" without having to design by commitee or rub a whole lot of people the wrong way.
