Somehow the video preview failed, i.e. it shows nothing on videos. Pictures etc work.
Does one need to have a media player installed or something else (Kaffeine here; KDE 3.4)?

You need to first install KMplayer:
http://kmplayer.kde.org/

and then the video preview will work. Most distros (SUSE, Redhat, Mandrake, etc) don't install KMplayer by default, and some don't even offer it as a package for some unfathomable reason.
