Somebody has to package software and distribute base packages, updates and bug fixes. That's the (literal) job of a distributor, aka distro. There's plenty of room for competition. They are the "open administrators" versus the "open developers" of KDE (or Linux, or BSD, or whatever)... they are complementary and do all the work so, for the user, it just works.
