It's not media:/ that's working fine, it's kaffeine, kmplayer and amarok that are working fine again after having found ways to mediate between media:/ and their backends (instead of achieving real progress they needed to fix this). And if media:/ is working fine for you, then try to trash a file from system:/.

It's really not the only way, you can tell kdesktop to show icons for unmounted media.

Oh yes there would be something, the mountpoints, and konqueror/the file dialog could be smart and give them special treatment, such as device icons and a 'mount' action. Just like media:/, but without the proprietary URLs. |

Edgy includes patches to add the extra options to the mountpoints in /media, BTW.
