KDE 4
by Diederik van der Boor on Wednesday 21/Mar/2007, @06:38
It seams KDE4 is getting closer and closer :) I'm just curious though how many changes we'll see in the applications. A freeze in June is really close, but I'm happy to see there is such a long time to stabilize KDE4.

I guess it's the difference between "KDE4" and "KDE 4.0". It's been emphasized before (can't find the blog entry anymore), and I think it's important to mention it again.

I guess you can say KDE 4.0 brings cool stuff in the libraries, and some cool new apps. In KDE 4.1, more and more apps start taking advantage of the new libraries. This also happened with KDE 3.1, or Mac OS X 10.0.

Sorry two corrections:
- first I like to thank very much for KDE4, my post seams a bit harsh.
- "KDE 3.1" should be "KDE 3.0" off course. KDE 3.1 and Mac OS 10.1 / 10.2 showed more features in the libraries.

it's even more like the situation with 2.0 than 3.0. 3.0 had few new library features and didn't introduce any really large subsystems. 2.0 had a large number of new infrastructure pieces, new apps (file manager, desktp and panels =) and took a long time to get out the door ...

but yes, you're right that we've been down this path before and it took a couple releases for apps to "catch up" with the library changes.

personally, i can't wait to get back to straight app devel ;)
