  KDE-EDU 4.0 Polishing on Saturday
Community and Events Posted by Albert Astals Cid on Tuesday 11/Sep/2007, @05:42
from the lets-do-some-testing dept.
This Saturday (15.09.) will see the first KDE-EDU 4.0 Polishing Day. The aim is to allow direct communication between users and developers. Issues, doubts and new ideas can be discussed, solved and coded in real time. For this purpose, a meeting will be held in #kde-polishing from 8:00 to 15:00 UTC. KHangMan, KGeography and blinKen will be this first meetings subjects. In order to participate, KDE 4.0 Beta 2 or newer is required, but using the precompiled KDE 4.0 Beta 2 packages for Kubuntu, Mandriva and openSUSE or the "KDE Four Live" CD is fine. Join in — you can make a difference!

Please, port tuxmath to KDE 4.0 :-)
by from Brazil on Tuesday 11/Sep/2007, @16:01
I am not a developer, thatīs why I donīt do it by myself.

Tuxmath is crazy, I love this apps.

I saw o little 9 y.o. girl screaming and asking for help, struggling to solve that math problems. This edu-game is funny and it must be at KDE-EDU. Maybe the same structure could be used with a similar game for keyboard typing, instead of math problems, letters and words falling down.

Never used KDE-EDU
by T. J. Brumfield on Tuesday 11/Sep/2007, @20:32
I've never used the apps personally, but I've always loved the notion that KDE has committed to education software, which is really important. As a parent, I look forward to building my daughter her own KDE-EDU box when she is old enough.

And apps like Marble, Kalzium and Kiten should make inroads into schools for Linux.

by djouallah mimoune on Wednesday 12/Sep/2007, @09:37
i would like to say that the first thing, that my little brother has used when he touched kde was all those app in edutainement,( of course beside nexuiz ;)
if i have a one complain about kde-education and kde applications in general is the naming scheme, that's why i was very happy by the new name of parley.
so please guys try to be imaginative, surprise us with new sexy names like parley, kde-applications is wider then kde, even wider then linux

KDE EDU
by Martin on Wednesday 12/Sep/2007, @14:15
I understand that KDE Edu packages are there. This is a type of software that is coded, software that is sold and requested on the market. But is it really used? I mean the children are supposed to work with these games but educational stuff is boring and how will you lock down that children don't do something else with KDE. I mean as a ten year old I coded programs. Given the overcomplex task of entering programming today, with all the svn, complex documentation and toolkits I wonder what you would recommend a 11 year old today. How can he or she code KDE?

Why do you assume that children like simple stuff? Simple memory games with no real learning factor. What is your educational concept behind it?

My impression always was that Education software is like tomes. You want it but you don't use it.

USELESS RESPONSE
by P. Philipse on Thursday 13/Sep/2007, @15:09
Don't people have anything better to do then deliver useless criticism?
And I reckon from people outside the user-community.
I can only take my hat off to you developers, I find your work highly constructive and positive in creating opensource "FREE" learning opportunities.

Thank You !!!

thanks to kde-edu developers
by Richlv on Friday 14/Sep/2007, @01:32
kde-edu apps are really great. thanks to all developers.
it's these things that get people interested intially in kde :)

btw, what's the status of kworldclock in kde4 ? is it being ported, and maybe it is being finally moved out of games->toys ? :)

it is a realy nice application, and one that attracts people to kde. we had computer available two years ago in the new years eve, and we had it open all the time. "hey, it's new year in kamchatka ! raise your glass !" ;)

and last time people remembered about the nice world map, and asked "hey, is that cool app still there ?" =)

Off topic whinge about the dot's comment system
by Adrian Baugh on Saturday 15/Sep/2007, @08:44
Another article on the dot, another set of comments. And yet again, because of a troll first post, the entire discussion gets hijacked in responding to a troll who we shouldn't be bothering to humour in the first place. It happens on a very high proportion of stories now.

There are many things I like about the dot, including the way I don't have to have yet another user account for a discussion forum and how you seem to have solved the problem of spam without requiring annoying captcha-solving. But the problem of trolls on here is rapidly making the comments pages not worth reading. Moderation systems always seem to be controversial and get emotional responses but I do wonder whether the dot needs to consider something like that, just to keep the forum worth reading.

Anyway, kudos to all the kdeedu (and other kde) developers who over the years have provided us all with such an excellent desktop.

I love kgeography!
by John on Sunday 23/Sep/2007, @03:42
Hehe I wonder what most of the people who say kde-edu is useless would score on the kgeography-"click division in world map" test :D
Anyway big thanks to all kde-edu developers!

Flamings are fun
by Kleag on Monday 24/Sep/2007, @13:58
Hello,

I missed this blog entry and the first answers. The Jos entry did take my attention and then I read all the reactions.

Well, please KDE EDU people take the previous reactions as what they are: funny things based on false assumptions of various types. These people need some education :-) Somebody to write a netiquette of free software philosiphy learning app ?

Anyway, I currently not have much use of the kde-edu apps, but my children advancing in age, I hope that your apps will continue to be so great :-)

Continue you great work, please!
