"Software libre" is a Spanish phrase not French. You're right on the meaning of it though.

You're certainly right but "libre" is also used in french and, AFAIK, got the same meaning as the spanish "libre". Only the pronounciation differs :).

In french we rather say "logiciel libre" though.
