Apparently, MS has more or less released the specs of their binary formats.
Is there any plan to improve Koffices filter there (not talking about OXML but previous docs)?

No. The real reasons behind the weakness of KOffice filters is not the lack of spec but the lack of a developer interested in doing the work. At least, for the .doc file format, we allready had the spec (up to 97), but even with that, the filters were not complete. The current focus is full support of ODF, and that is allready quiet some work.

he makes some very good points, especially that you can't provide compatibility to MS Office without adapting your whole program to the spec.
