you can look on for example Aaron's blog for answers to that question, but a hint: the desktop with icons was developed for 180K floppydrives with just a few files. We now use filemanagers to manage thousands of files. Surely the desktop can be used better, as it's original use (showing all files and/or applications you have) isn't there anymore?
