Maybe the way Dolphin does allow you to select several items by using a small icon overlaying the item might be a solution.

Yes, there is an entry in digiKam bugzilla. Marcel will take a look when he port all icon view to Qt4 model/view (this part still use Qt3 transition classes). It's planed later than 0.10.0 release
