Yeah, that's not clear from the digest. Presumably though, it's a way to supply a buffer of sound to read/write to the soundcard, instead of just asking it to play a file etc. Slightly more low-level, or possibly very low-level. I remember the Phonon guys saying that it WOULDN'T support the kind of very low-level stuff that, say, pro audio apps need, though.
