I think focusing on filters is important but
premature. Once e.g. KWord gets feature
parity with Word (XP or whatever then current
version would be), then it makes sense to try to
translate to and from Word format. At this
point you can't recover all formatting
properly anyways. For instance, without
hyphenation even plain text Word document will
not have proper formatting when imported into
KWord.
