The testing period for the next major KDE release has begun with the release of KDE 3.5 Beta 1, codenamed Kanzler. This will be the last major release in the KDE 3 series so make sure it turns into the best one by downloading and testing today. The 3.5 Beta 1 information page gives the download link as well as an important warning on using Qt 3.3.5.
The KDE security team has published a security advisory concerning a local root vulnerability: kcheckpass can, in some configurations, be used to gain root access. All KDE releases starting from KDE 3.2.0 up to including KDE 3.4.2 are affected.
To begin the KDE 3.5 release cycle, I uploaded KDE 3.5 Alpha 1 to the FTP servers. We're facing some trouble that is typical for an Alpha release, but it also brings some nice KDE 3.5 features to your desktop.

This is the second translation and bugfix release to the 3.4 series, it includes all security updates to date, numerous minor fixes and improved translations including a new Afrikaans translation pack. Two security advisories have been issued this week. The first affects Kate and KWrite as shipped with KDE 3.2.x up to including 3.4.0: backup files are created during saving with default permissions, even if the original file had more strict permissions set.
The KDE Project and Google announce the 24 KDE projects selected for the
"Summer of Code" project. The lucky students and the KDE e.V. will receive a
total of $120,000 if they can complete their projects in the allotted two
months.
Today Jimmy Wales, chairman of the Wikimedia Foundation, announced the beginning of a cooperation between Wikimedia and the KDE project at LinuxTag in Karlsruhe, Germany.

At the Dutch KDE-PIM meeting in Annahoeve last weekend it was announced that the KDE project will offer groupware services to all KDE contributors using the Free Software groupware server Kolab2. This means that every KDE project or contributor can get a Kolab2 account for sharing tasks, appointments, contacts and email.
