Announcing New KDE-PIM Site

Klaus Staerk alerted us to the launch
of pim.kde.org.
The main goal of this site is to organize KDE Personal Information Management news updates as well as group together all the related projects and goals.
The site already has some basic information about not so well-known PIM
projects such as Kandy,
Karm, and
KAlarm. Also available is information on current and future roadmaps for KDE PIM.

I remember reading about a project which would let you access Psion-organiser through Konqueror. It worked more or less similarly as Psions PsiWin-software. Any news on that project?

You can download what you need from http://plptools.sourceforge.net/

When can I use KAB to group persons/groups (make mailinglists)
And share the addressbokk with my company (LDAP sounds good)

I have started a PIM application call VirtuaLaw using QT3 and its database widgets. The app will be a cross platform QT3 app. It will be multi-user, allowing for the sharing of calendars and contacts. It will support PostgreSQL and hopefully a local database that can be accessed through QT3 ODBC.

You can see a screen shot here:

The complete version of VirtuaLaw will be a legal case management system. I will be releasing a version under a different name that just does contact, calendar and mail.

Oh, yeah the Source Forge site is here:

looks very nice :)
how do you like the database support in qt3? good?

by Bryan Brunton (not verified)

Its hard to rate the database support as I haven't written too many lines of code that use it.

There are a couple strikes against it. I think that the Trolls should have done more testing. At the very least, they need to include more complete example applications that demonstrate rigorous use of the db APIs. The examples are currently pretty weak.

I found and reported one infinite loop bug in the database code. Some things are quirky and require too much code: you have to create a property map if you want the text of a qcombo box that is bound to a qsqlform to update the db field. For some silly reason the Trolls designed it so the field that automatically updates is the index of the qcombobox selected item.

Another quirk: once you have added columns to qdatabase table, there is no way to retrieve the names of the field that is associated with the column.

Clearly these APIs haven't been fully field tested.

why are there people who want evolution-type for kde, whats wrong with using evolution within kde? have you guys got a complex over gtk/gnome?

by Carbon (not verified)

Evolution runs in KDE, but it isn't a KDE app. Meaning, no integration with kab or konqi (you have to manually add it to the email client list, etc), no using the same widget style as other kde apps (unless you are using a gtk style in kde), no control from the system tray or via dcop, and so forth. These are relatively minor issues, but a DE is really designed to be as integrated as possible.

Personally, I have to say that I find GTK/gnome apps tend to have fairly bad UIs, particularly when it comes to file selection - can't say I've used evolution, so have no idea what it is like as an individual app, but I get constantly annoyed by GTK apps that have unfriendly file dialog boxes...

I tested KOrganiser some months ago and I found there was some troubles to use it. I test it again today, I find it is better, but I have quickly found some troubles (KDE 2.2.1) :
- When I check a category for an event, it is then impossible to uncheck it !
- About the recall (bell), there are two abilities, sound and program, but it lacks an obvious one : show a popup message
- About displaying the period as busy or free, I do not see how the two display differ...
- I see no help, the button "?" seems without effects...
- In the tasks I do not see the difference when the "No associated hour" (translated from french) is checked or no...

I am sorry, I find it is not a program ready for the end-user... Here would be the first priority, I think...

Also about kadressbook I feel as a big weakness that adresses may not be ranged by families.

I said :

> - I see no help, the button "?" seems without effects..

"?" is without effect, yes, but there is a very good help, well translated (I searched for a contextual help). So now I understand what means "No associated hour", but I still have no answers about other "troubles".

This is the wrong place to put such information. If you'd like these features to be implemented, then the place to put them is at bugs.kde.org, which allows the developers to easily track bug/feature todo lists, order by priority, etc. Putting it here, developers will go "hey, i could implement that, but i'm busy doing xzy-important-feature and 123-big-bug-fix right now", and once they have time to do it, they'll already be working on something else.

It should be possible display a popup message for alarms. I believe there is a command you can do to do have kde display a messagebox with arbitrary text (perhaps a dcop call to knotify, i'm not certain).

As for kadressbook not being ranged by families, why don't you just do a search for the last name of the particular family you are trying to get a listing for?

> This is the wrong place to put such information.

I think it is "a" (not "the") right place. Here it is speaking about the new features of KDE-PIM and I think it is good to say that before improving new features, it is important to finish old ones.

> It should be possible display a popup message for alarms. I believe there is a command you can do to do have kde display a messagebox with arbitrary text (perhaps a dcop call to knotify, i'm not certain).

It is not for the end user. I mean something obvious, integrated, simple. At least written in the documentation...

!!??! By families, I mean categories...

>I think it is "a" (not "the") right place. Here it is speaking about the new features of KDE-PIM and I think it is good to say that before improving new features, it is important to finish old ones.

Well, this is a user discussion forum. If you want to get developers to look at it, it's logical to use a communications medium that primarily developers use. I'm not trying to OT-Nazi you, I'm just saying you'll have considerably better luck with developers actually implmenting said features if you put in the bug/wishlist database.

>!!??! By families, I mean categories...
Ah, nevermind then, I misunderstood.

by Peter Simonsson (not verified)

Categories will be implemented in the new addressbook for KDE3.
And at least in my version a messagebox is shown when it's time.

..are there any plans to make konqueror more 'nautilus-like'?

At the moment konqueror is a good file manager and browser, but nautilus kicks konquerors but in the eyecandy department. But not only that, there are also one or two features that would be nice to see in Konqy.

for example notes..

okay, make that 'feature' :)

But honestly, while nautilus is slow (heh, on a pentium 60...) i still prefer it over Konqueror.

Just to make this more general: What is planned for Konqy (browser and filemanager wise)?

Would it be posible to fix the jumps with the X system? I mean: When you set the default login as a X login (KDM for example), firts, it appears the console login. Then it shows a X jump to a gray X background, later the kdm background and after it, the kdm login manager. and I think it is not very elegant. It would be posible to fix this jumps?

And if you set a image KDM background, you have another jump :(
