DATELINE OCTOBER 23, 2000

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New KDE Release Is a Major Advance for Linux® Desktop

Next Generation of Leading Desktop for Linux® and Other UNIXes® Ships

October 23, 2000 (The INTERNET). The KDE Team today announced the release of KDE 2.0 (named Kopernicus), KDE's powerful, modular, Internet-enabled desktop. This highly anticipated release constitutes the next generation of the award-winning KDE 1 series, which culminated in the release of KDE 1.1.2 just over a year ago. Kopernicus is the work product of hundreds of dedicated developers originating from over 30 countries.

"With the experience gained from developing KDE 1, we almost completely re-engineered KDE 2 to make it even more intuitive, powerful and user friendly," explained Matthias Ettrich, founder of the KDE project. "We think that current KDE users will be pleasantly surprised with the remarkable improvements we have achieved. KDE 2 offers the desktop user the benefit of standards compliance and an array of new technologies, from Konqueror, a full featured web browser and file manager, to KOffice, an integrated office suite, as well as a slew of usability enhancements, such as KDE's expanded themeability and configurability and a new KDE Help Center. It also offers developers an assortment of powerful new tools -- from KParts, KDE's component object technology, to KIO, KDE's network transparent I/O architecture -- for rapid development and deployment of first-rate free or proprietary software."

"KDE 2.0 is an important release," stated Ransom Love, president and CEO of Caldera Systems, Inc. "Our customers are anxious to migrate not only their servers but also their desktops to the Linux technology. KDE 2.0 will be a key component of OpenLinux eDesktop, our solution for a seamless and cost-effective transition strategy."

"SuSE Linux views KDE 2 as one of the key milestones to vault Linux to the same landslide success on the desktop that it already has in the server space," added Dirk Hohndel, CTO of Suse AG. "We are excited to be able to offer KDE 2.0 as the default desktop with our next version of the SuSE Linux OS. I am confident that third party developers will realize the enormous potential KDE 2 offers and will migrate their applications to Linux/KDE."

"As Linux-Mandrake focuses on making Linux easy to use, we are very pleased to include KDE 2, a major evolution of the already superb KDE 1, in our upcoming Linux-Mandrake 7.2 release", added Gaël Duval, co-founder of Mandrakesoft. "With KDE 2 and KOffice, the KDE team demonstrates again their deep commitment to make Linux a viable desktop alternative for all users."

"Corel has had a long, successful relationship with the KDE project, and the release of KDE 2.0 is an important milestone for Linux," said Rene Schmidt, Executive Vice President for Linux Products, Corel Corporation. "We believe that our customers will be ecstatic over the improvements and new features of this landmark version. The enhancements to the framework provide power for the desktop in the simple and elegant fashion that our customers have grown to expect."

Kopernicus includes the core KDE libraries, the core desktop environment, the initial release of the KOffice suite, as well as the over 100 applications from the other standard base KDE packages: Administration, Games, Graphics, Multimedia, Network, Personal Information Management (PIM), Toys and Utilities. Kopernicus is currently available in 15 languages and translations into 20 additional languages will be available in the coming weeks.

All of KDE 2.0 is available for free under an Open Source license. Likewise, Trolltech'stm Qt® 2.2.1, the GUI toolkit on which KDE is based, is now available for free under two Open Source licenses: the Q Public License and the GNU General Public License.

More information about KDE 2 is available in a slideshow presentation and on KDE's web site, including an evolving FAQ to answer questions about migrating to KDE 2.0 from KDE 1.x, a number of screenshots, developer information and a developer's KDE 1 - KDE 2 porting guide.

KDE 2: The K Desktop Environment. Konqueror is KDE 2's next-generation web browser, file manager and document viewer. Widely heralded as a technological break-through for the Linux desktop, the standards-compliant Konqueror has a component-based architecture which combines the features and functionality of Internet Explorer®/Netscape Communicator® and Windows Explorer®. Konqueror will support the full gamut of current Internet technologies, including JavaScript, Java®, HTML 4.0, CSS-1 and -2 (Cascading Style Sheets), SSL (Secure Socket Layer for secure communications) and Netscape Communicator® plug-ins (for playing FlashTM, RealAudioTM, RealVideoTM and similar technologies). The great bulk of this technology is already in place and functional for KDE 2.0.

KDE 2 also ships with the highly anticipated initial release of the KOffice suite. The integrated suite consists of a spreadsheet application (KSpread), a vector drawing application (KIllustrator), a frame-based word-processing application (KWord), a presentation program (KPresenter), and a chart and diagram application (KChart). Native file formats are XML-based, and work on filters for proprietary binary file formats is progressing. Combined with a powerful scripting language and the ability to embed individuals components within each other using KDE's component technology (KParts), the free KOffice suite will soon provide all the necessary functionality to all but the most demanding power users.

In addition, KIO's network transparency offers seamless support for accessing or browsing files on Linux, NFS shares, MS Windows® SMB shares, HTTP pages, FTP directories and LDAP directories. The modular, plug-in nature of KDE's file architecture makes it simple to add additional protocols (such as IPX or WebDAV) to KDE, which would then automatically be available to all KDE applications.

KDE 2 introduces a new multimedia architecture based on aRts, the Analog Realtime Synthesizer. ARts enables playing multiple audio or video streams concurrently, whether on the desktop or over a network. ARts is a full-featured sound system, and includes filters, a modular analog synthesizer and a mixer. Its architecture allows developers to create additional filter plugins and users to apply sequences of filters using a graphical drag-n-drop approach. Video support is available for MPEG versions 1, 2 and 4 (experimental), as well as the AVI and DivX formats.

KDE's customizability touches every aspect of this next-generation desktop. KDE's sophisticated theme support starts with Qt's style engine, which permits developers and artists to create their own widget designs. KDE 2.0 ships with over 14 of these styles, some of which emulate the look of various operating systems, and additionally does an excellent job of importing themes from GTK and GNOME. Other configuration options permit users to: choose among icon themes and system sounds (using a simple drop-and-replace approach); configure key bindings; select from over 30 languages; customize toolbar layouts and entries and menu composition; employ single-click or double-click to activate desktop items; navigate the desktop using a keyboard instead of a mouse; and much, much more. Moreover, KDE 2 fully supports Unicode and KHTML is the only free HTML rendering engine on Linux/X11 that features nascent support for BiDi scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew.

Besides the exceptional compliance with Internet and file-sharing standards mentioned above, KDE 2 achieves exceptional compliance with the available Linux desktop standards. KWin, KDE's new re-engineered window manager, complies to the new Window Manager Specification. Konqueror and KDE comply to the Desktop Entry Standard. KDE 2 generally complies with the X Drag-and-Drop (XDND) protocol as well as with the X11R6 session management protocol (XSMP).

KDE 2: The K Development Environment. Kopernicus offers developers a rich set of major technological improvements overthe critically acclaimed KDE 1 series. Chief among these are the Desktop COmmunication Protocol (DCOP), the I/O libraries (KIO), the component object model (KParts), an XML-based GUI class, and a standards-compliant HTML rendering engine (KHTML).

DCOP is a client-to-client communications protocol intermediated by a server over the standard X11 ICE library. The protocol supports both message passing and remote procedure calls using an XML-RPC to DCOP "gateway". Bindings for C, C++ and Python, as well as experimental Java bindings, are available.

KIO implements application I/O in a separate process to enable a non-blocking GUI without the use of threads. The class is network transparent and hence can be used seamlessly to access HTTP, FTP, POP, IMAP, NFS, SMB, LDAP and local files. Moreover, its modular and extensible design permits developers to "drop in" additional protocols, such as WebDAV, which will then automatically be available to all KDE applications. KIO also implements a trader which can locate handlers for specified mimetypes; these handlers can then be embedded within the requesting application using the KParts technology.

KParts, KDE 2's component object model, allows an application to embed another within itself. The technology handles all aspects of the embedding, such as positioning toolbars and inserting the proper menus when the embedded component is activated or deactivated. KParts can also interface with the KIO trader to locate available handlers for specific mimetypes or services/protocols. This technology is used extensively by the KOffice suite and Konqueror.

The XML GUI employs XML to create and position menus, toolbars and possibly other aspects of the GUI. This technology offers developers and users the advantage of simplified configurability of these user interface elements across applications and automatic compliance with the KDE Standards and Style Guide irrespective of modifications to the standards.

KHTML is an HTML 4.0 compliant rendering and drawing engine. The class will support the full gamut of current Internet technologies, including JavaScriptTM, Java®, HTML 4.0, CSS-2 (Cascading Style Sheets), SSL (Secure Socket Layer for secure communications) and Netscape Communicator® plugins (for viewing FlashTM, RealAudioTM, RealVideoTM and similar technologies). The KHTML class can easily be used by an application as either a widget (using normal X Window parenting) or as a component (using the KParts technology). KHTML, in turn, has the capacity to embed components within itself using the KParts technology.

Downloading and Compiling Kopernicus

The source packages for Kopernicus are available for free download at http://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/tar/generic/src/ or in the equivalent directory at one of the many KDE ftp server mirrors. Kopernicus requires qt-2.2.1, which is available from the above locations under the name qt-x11-2.2.1.tar.gz. Kopernicus will not work with older versions of Qt.

For further instructions on compiling and installing Kopernicus, please consult the installation instructions and, if you encounter problems, the compilation FAQ.

Installing Binary Packages

Some distributors choose to provide binary packages of KDE for certain versions of their distribution. Some of these binary packages for Kopernicus will be available for free download under http://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/ or under the equivalent directory at one of the many KDE ftp server mirrors. Please note that the KDE team is not responsible for these packages as they are provided by third parties -- typically, but not always, the distributor of the relevant distribution.

Kopernicus requires qt-2.2.1, the free version of which is available from the above locations usually under the name qt-x11-2.2.1. Kopernicus will not work with older versions of Qt.

At the time of this release, pre-compiled packages are available for:

Please check the servers periodically for pre-compiled packages for other distributions. More binary packages will become available over the coming days and weeks.

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Iuri Fiedoruk - 2000-10-23

Great! But it's frustating don't having redhat 6.2 for a lot of people, including me. Anyway, besides this problem, congratulations KDE Team! kde 2 is out at last!

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Ernest Spencer - 2000-10-24

I've got Redhat 6.0. Your solution is to compile the source yourself. It'll take about a day to do it. I did the Release Candidate 2. So far, I have only discovered one bug. The screen saver setup screen does not work properly - on the blank screen seems to work and not the other screen savers. THANKS TO ALL OF THE KDE DEVELOPERS FOR A GREAT JOB.

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - ne... - 2000-10-23

From all of us ungrateful slobs who are always petering you for more rpms/debs/tgzs etc., THANKS! We really appreciate it, we just don't how to say it. Now if we can only leave you in relative peace so KDE 2.0.1 can be out by the next millenium...:)

Allthough there are not that many sensitive oppinions here, you should be carefull to publish IRC-channel content. People may acctually sue you for exposeing their privacy(like tapping a phone-conferance). Not that I think any of those will, just a reminder... Anyway, great job KDE-people! -- Andreas Joseph Krogh <andreak@nettverk.no>

Thank you for the Great Project - Anton Velev - 2000-10-24

Greetings from Bulgaria KDE will always be the best! I am very proud that I am KDE user and that I encouraged my friends to use KDE. Thank you guys for not giving up. You won the users and the support of free open source community. Now hope that soon or latar Gnome and others will join KDE, in order to unite and cooperate the free open source forces. We are with you, you prove your selfs and won the first battle, many non-KDE users will now join you. Next battle is to won Gnome and others to join the KDE and unite in power free open source alliance which will destroy the EMPIRE. Good luck!

Great work! - CH - 2000-10-24

I've just seen many screenshots and the slide show you are referencing in your announcement, but I must say that KDE2 seems to be a milestone in Unix (especially Linux) Desktops. THANKS A LOT KDE-TEAM FOR THAT GREAT PIECE OF SOFTWARE! I'm sure, that people, like me, who were not involved in programming that masterpiece, couldn't even estimate how much work it was to release KDE2! THANKS AGAIN! I hope, that many Linux distributors will support the KDE project and its team (financially)!! Greets, CH Austria

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Carlos Miguel - 2000-10-24

Congratulations KDE Team, thank you for this revolutionary platform, and my most sincere admiration for keeping kool and focused despite all the recent FUD and vaporware announcements. Congratulations again.

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - James Clarke (Remove NO SP AM) - 2000-10-24

Now put some new screen shots up!<br> <b>Please!!!</b>

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Thomas - 2000-10-24

Yes, screenshots <B>are</B> important... It'll be the first step to improve PR !

PR and Lobbying - Arnold - 2000-10-24

Now! Make sure you have someone in San Francisco to go lobbying with the Big Irons. Seriously! No matter how good your product is, without efficient PR it will not survive. Look at a geek company like Ericsson vs the marketing oriented Nokia. Nokia makes $1,500,000,000 in revenue on cellulars alone, whereas Ericsson makes a loss. Don't be like Ericsson when it comes to marketing, please! It will never be enough with a superior product. Go get yourselves a nice, but politically correct scandal (who is willing to have perverted sex with some Hollywood Star? Pamela andersson, anyone?). Use the tabloids (and I don't mean www.theregister.co.uk ...) to your advantage (and I don't mean the tabloids of Belgium, Poland, or Norway). Go for the Big! New York, London, Paris, San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc. USE this opportunity! Make people aware of KDE! Don't be such nerds ;)

Re: PR and Lobbying - Torben Skolde - 2000-10-24

Silly arguments, but true. T Skolde P.S. Great job!

Nokia & Ericsson... - Janne - 2000-10-24

Well, I don't think that Ericsson is the "geek" company, and Nokia is the "marketing" company. The reason why Nokia does so well, is because they make the kind of phones people want. If you want to talk about geek-phones.... Well, Nokia had the worlds first phone/PDA-hybrid in 1996 (if I remember correctly), Ericsson just released their first phone/PDA. Nokia also had the worlds first WAP-phone. Only thing Ericsson has that Nokia doesn't have, is the plug-in MP3 accessory for mobile phone. But enogh about cell-phones, today is the KDE-day =)!!!!

Congratulations; experiences installing SuSE RPMs - Paul Leopardi - 2000-10-24

Congratulations to the whole extended KDE team: designers, coders, artists, documenters, translators, packagers, testers and supporting organizations. <br> <br> I'm interested to know about other people's experience of installing KDE 2.0 from the SuSE 6.4 and 7.0 i386 RPMs. If anyone doing either of these particular installs has any problems with the installation or with starting and logging in via KDE 2.0, please let the SuSE packager know, but could you also post your experience to either the suse-linux-e or the kde-user mailing list, or even (as a last resort) here. Your problem may be with the RPMs themselves, or with the documentation for the installation process. <br> <br> As stated above "the KDE team is not responsible for these packages as they are provided by third parties" but someone has to report problems, so that these third parties can fix them.

Re: Congratulations; experiences installing SuSE RPMs - Chris Naeger - 2000-10-24

Hi, the SuSE 7.0 rpms work smoothly. No warnings, no errors. The only question remaining is if they were built without the QT-Exceptions (which should make KDE2 a lot faster as discussed on ./ or the mailing list). I am working with old hardware Pentium 133 and need every kind of speed-up I can get. However, KDE 2 runs really fast (faster than KDE1) on old hardware (given 'enough' memory i.e. 80 MB in my case). Thanks a lot for the good work. Chris

Re: Congratulations; experiences installing SuSE RPMs - ferdinand gassauer - 2000-10-24

no problems encountered just a hint - IMHO it's not necessary to download qtdevel2.rpm if you don't want to compile KDE/QT apps. ferdinand

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Zeljko Vukman - 2000-10-24

Congratulations to all KDE developers (we must not forget Thorsten & Mosfet for their contribution to KDE look'n'feel). KDE2 is not only a great desktop environment, it is a great platform for further development. I am sure that within 6 months we will see many contributions from non-core KDE developers. Opera is going QT, what's next...?

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Matthias Ettrich - 2000-10-24

Nice Picture, thanks :)

Mandrake RPM:s? - Jan Ekholm - 2000-10-24

Congratulations to all of you who have worked very hard with this relase the last months!<p> As a Mandrake 7.1 owner I was wondering wether there are and 7.1 RPM:s anywhere? The KDE mirrors do carry RPM:s, but only for 7.2. The small README that can be downloaded says I can use the RPM:s on other distros too (I presume he means older Mandrakes), but "<em>I need to upgrade 4 packages and probably a few others too</em>". Well, I started on the upgrading of the 4 packages, and it all boils down to a complete system upgrade, with a new version of glibc, rpm and everything. Not something I want to do to a stable system.<p> I hope MandrakeSoft plans to support their current distributions too, as 7.2 is not even out yet. I don't want to run 7.2 just to get KDE2, as my last attempt at getting 7.2 installed resulted in a system that hardly even booted...<p> Can I rebuild the packages myself from the src RPM:s on a 7.1? I could try of course, but if someone has better knowledge I could save the needed hours of compilation! :-)

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - Aaron J. Seigo - 2000-10-24

I just installed those RPMs on my wife's Mandrake 7.1 system.... glibc was fine (if you upgraded when the security alert came out... its only a few rpms and they don't do anything bad), but RPM needed to be upgraded, along with another half dozen or packages. (just upgrade RPM to figure out which ones =) yes, it is tedious but nothing breaks and the results are amazing! be brave!

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - Jan Ekholm - 2000-10-24

Hmm, I get this when I try to upgrade my <tt>rpm</tt> from 3.0.5 to 4.0.3:<p> <blockquote><tt> # rpm -q glibc<br> glibc-2.1.3-17mdk<br> <br> # rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0-3mdk.i586.rpm<br> error: failed dependencies:<br> glibc >= 2.1.92 is needed by rpm-4.0-3mdk<br> menu < 2.1.5-29mdk conflicts with rpm-4.0-3mdk<br> popt-devel = 1.6-3mdk is needed by rpm-devel-4.0-3mdk<br> </tt></blockquote><p> How can something like <tt>menu</tt> conflict with <tt>rpm</tt>? This sounds weird. And I don't want to upgrade a fundamental package like <tt>glibc</tt> to some experimental version just for this.<p> I think I'll abandon Mandrake soon and go with a distribution which has sane dependencies and packaging systems, such as Debian.<p> Thanks for the hint anyway, I'm glad you had better luck with your upgrade!

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - Mike Hunt - 2000-10-24

Why are you doing that? Install KDE2, but don't install rpm2. Instructions for installing 7.2's KDE2 over 7.1 are here http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=00/10/12/0828220&cid=108

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - Jan Ekholm - 2000-10-25

The binary RPM:s need it. I needed to update the packages <b><tt>menu</tt>, <tt>Mandrake_Desk</tt>, <tt>OpenSSL</tt>, <tt>pam</tt></b>, and <b><tt>qt2</tt></b> according to the README in the directory for Mandrake in one of the KDE mirrors.<p> The instructions you posted were for the old pre-release.<p> Ah, well, I don't think this will work out. Thanks for the help anyway, but I'll switch distro to something which provides support for old customers.<p>

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - D. D. Brierton - 2000-10-25

I also run Mandrake 7.1 and am reluctant to upgrade just yet. I guess it is too much to expect the KDE maintainers themselves to provide Mandrake 7.1 RPMs. I am slightly bewildered that Mandrake look like they won't, especially as 7.2 isn't even out yet. Is there any chance of someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. not me) providing 7.1 RPMs?---Or, failing that, is there any chance of someone giving step by step instructions about how to install from source. Ideally this would need to include instructions on whether the installation should overwrite KDE1 or not, and also how to make any changes to kdm and gdm (I use the latter) that are needed. In Mandrake KDE is so integral to the distribution that I really would prefer to install KDE2 from RPMs, and ideally one's provided by Mandrake.

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - sesquiped - 2000-10-26

I'm currently running Mandrake 7.1 with kde2. It was a bit of a struggle to get it working, and in fact, a big part still doesn't work. But I'll tell you what I did anyway: Download the mandrake 7.2 rpms. I currently have the following installed: kdesupport-2.0-1mdk kdelibs-sound-2.0-2mdk kdelibs-2.0-2mdk kdebase-2.0-1mdk which is the minimum necessary to run kde (as far as i could tell). Also download the latest qt1 and qt2 rpms (from rpmfind or another cooker mirror). Now, quit kde and close your x server. Remove every last trace of anything to do with kde or qt, as suggested by another poster on here. The commands are something like: rpm -qa | grep kde | xargs rpm -e --nodeps rpm -qa | grep qt | xargs rpm -e --nodeps Now install all your rpms. I'd probably do qt 1 and 2 first and then the kde stuff. Ok, now if your system is anything like mine, kdm will crash on startup. I have no idea why. Just live without it. Use gdm or xdm or just plain old startx. Right now, I'm living with gdm. Select a KDE session type and it should work just fine. Once you get stuff working, you can install the devel rpms and the extra stuff (which is mostly unnecessary anyway). Good luck, and it's definitely worth it... kde2 is amazing.

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - J. J. Ramsey - 2000-10-26

Extra packages that you should get: htdig, menudrake, Mandrake Cooker's latest version of rpm (3.0.5, not 4.0, BTW), and--get this--Lesstif. Yes, Lesstif. The kdebase RPM from Mandrake has a dependency on the file libXm.so.1, a.k.a. Motif. I think this has to do with Netscape plugins in Konqueror or something. And make sure to get the latest version of pam from Mandrake Cooker, which should hopefully get kdm to work. (kdm works on my system; I know that much.)

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - D. D. Brierton - 2000-10-27

<p>Thanks for the advice. I followed it and am now posting this from Konqueror. However, there are a couple of things not quite working ... does anyone have any advice?</p> <ol> <li>In order to install kdebase I had to install mandrake_desk and now the only option available in either kdm or gdm is kde. I no longer have the option of starting GNOME, WindowMaker, BlackBox, Enlightenment, etc. This is a big problem for me. I use GNOME as my regular desktop---kde is something I use only about one third of the time in fact, although with kde2 that may ver well change. I also fairly regularly start a vanilla X session with just Blackbox, or bask in the visual glory that is WindowMaker. Can anyone offer any advice as to what I need to tweak or install to get kdm and gdm back to offering the full range of installed options?</li> <li>I am still using XFree86 3.3.6. kdemultimedia appears to require XFree86 4.0.1 (well, it says it requires libXaw.so.7 and XFree86-libs-4.0.1 seems to be its home). I have tried previously using XFree86 4 and it was not a happy experience for me so I'm stuck with 3.3.6. What would anyone recommend I do to get kdemultimedia installed? Is compiling from source my only option, or is there an rpm which does not depend on libXaw.so.7? If I install from source, can anyone advise on the configure options for maximum compatability with the kde2 rpms?</li> <p>I am using Mandrake 7.1 with all security updates installed, the latest version of Helix GNOME (including all most recent updates), and the kde2 rpms downloaded from the Mandrake 7.2beta ftp site.</p> <p>Thank you in advance,</p> <p>Best,</p> <p>Darren</p>

Re: Mandrake RPM:s? - D. D. Brierton - 2000-10-27

<p>I have solved the first problem. It seems that the installation of one of the packages (mandrake_desk?) deleted /etc/X11/window-managers. Thankfully I had a backup, restored it, moved /etc/X11/wmsession.d/, and ran convertsession and it built all the correct entries in /etc/X11/wmsession.d/. Now both kdm and gdm work.</p> <p>Any help with the kdemultimedia problem would be a big help.</p>

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Erlend Boe - 2000-10-24

I am also running an earlier version of Mandrake - 7.0. I did not see any readme file or any information anywhere about which system(s) the mandrake rpms work for. (except that they claim to be for the UNRELEASED 7.2) I'm in the middle of my download, should I just stop it now and forget all about kde 2? or are there some other rpms that I can use? (also, people say that the rpms will overwrite KDE 1, if so that is just PLAIN STUPID!!!)

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Rinse - 2000-10-24

Well, you could use the generic version of KDE 2.0 at ftp.kde.org, or you could try one of the Redhat-versions, if Mandrake doesn't release packages voor Mandrake 6.x and 7.0/7.1 KDE is not responsible for the packaging of third party packagers, so contact Mandrake for more details. If KDE 2.0. overwrites KDE 1.x, you could prefent it by using the prefix option of RPM or your compiler... Rinse

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Eric Laffoon - 2000-10-24

<p>I have opted to go with compiling the KDE 2 sources for some time for two reasons. One is that I wanted a pristeen KDE 2 without the debian menus and two is that I think installing KDE 2 in /usr is not rational. During the beta I have had to wipe and re-install which is easy unless you have used /usr for your $KDEDIR. I also have a fully functional KDE 1 should I need it. </p> <p>Find my Mandrake upgrade instructions for prepping Mandrake and compiiling KDE 2 <a href="http://virtualartisans.com/linux/mandrake/">here</a></p>

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Oliver Bausinger - 2000-10-24

Why not compile from source? This is really easy, go with ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde2 make make install and you can keep your KDE1 in parallel (OK, you have to tweak the login procedure a bit, but that´s not a great hassle ...)

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Matt - 2000-10-24

Congratulations from Sweden! It's not easy to decide <I>when</I> to release a big beast like this, there's always something to improve. But kudos to the development team, you have been professional working with a freeze for a long time, in order to get at stable version out. Boring I know, but necessary. Now comes the reward! Millions of users will start using KDE 2.0 in the coming months.

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Matt - 2000-10-24

And one more thing: A very well written press release! Thanks to whoever worked on it.

Mandrake RPMs and exception handling - Gordon Tyler - 2000-10-24

Does anybody know if the Mandrake RPMs (or any others for that matter) have been compiled with exceptions turned off (specifically for Qt)? It makes an immense difference in performance and memory footprint. So far, I've had to get the source tarballs for RC2 and compile with no-exception myself. Ciao, Gordon

I don't know 'unofficial' sites, but I downloaded the 2.0 release from the following site, located in Germany: ftp.de.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/deb/Debian/dists/potato/binary-i386/ I downloaded the entire distribution at 5K/sec with a 56K modem (this site is less overloaded than the official server). "Install KDE 2 Binaries" is out of date - Paul Leopardi - 2000-10-24

Please take down http://www.kde.org/install-binaries.html or update it. It is wrong and misleading. Newbies and other people who don't know KDE well will see the instructions but ignore the date (5 September) and therefore think that these instructions are valid for the recent KDE 2.0 release. <br> <br> The "Finding and Downloading Binaries" section is wrong. The "Installing Binaries" section is incomplete. It does not refer to the README files for the different distributions and it does not say how to start KDE 2.0. It does not say what to do to kdm to allow logins using kde2. <br> <br> If you don't believe me, check for yourself. <br> <br> Please also examine http://www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html I think it is not right for KDE 2.0, especially if KDE 2.0 is installed from the SuSE RPMs. I did not need to do all this and am running both KDE and KDE2 RC2. <br> <br> For more details, see my bug report <A href="http://bugs.kde.org/db/10/10102.html">10102</A>

Now KDE 2.0 is out, let's update and correct the F - Paul Leopardi - 2000-10-24

Yes, I know it is too early and there aren't enough questions, but <A href="http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq/kdefaq.html">the FAQ</A> already contains a section called "KDE 2.0 installation instructions". <br> <br> This section does not refer to /opt/kde2 as the directory where some or all distrbutions which use RPMs will install KDE 2.0. For example, SuSE RPMs have installed into /opt/kde2 all the way up to RC2 and I expect KDE 2.0 to also install into /opt/kde2, leaving the old KDE and QT alone. <br> <br> Am I wrong and do the RPMS now install KDE 2.0 into /opt/kde, overwriting some but not all old KDE apps; or does the FAQ need to be updated and corrected?

The Kool Desktop Environment !!! - Philozen - 2000-10-24

I thank you all for the fabulous job done. The more I know about the KDE people and the KDE project, the greater is my respect and admiration. After the last "unpleasant" events, news, articles that surrounded the project, once again, the KDE team kept the right attitude. I've got a sentence that shows this perfectly: "The one who knows, is humble by nature". KDE is more than a wonderful project, it's an extraordinary human adventure. Thanks again.

KDE 2.0 - Michael - 2000-10-24

Now that KDE 2.0 is out.. What next? Will KDE 2.0 vs Gnome be a legitimate fight? How many permutations of desktop enviroments does there need to be? Linux needs some focus -- luckily it seems liek KDE and Gnome are becoming more standard and those other desktop environments are becoming less popular... Now if there were less releases of Linux distributions...

Re: KDE 2.0 - Haakon Nilsen - 2000-10-24

We *do* need more than *one* desktop environment and more than *one* distro. What's needed is standards. There's a lot of work going on to standardize various aspects of KDE and GNOME so they can interoperate. As for distros, they should strive to follow the file system standard (www.linuxbase.org) and other standards that lessen the fundamental differences between distros.

Debian Potato Packages - Johannes Rohr - 2000-10-24

Dear Folks, thanks for your great Work! However, I would suggest to remove the potato KDE 2 packages from the stable tree. I downloaded them, only to find that they are NOT the final KDE 2 release but RC 1 aka unstable. I read that Ivan Moore (?!) has taken the KDE Linux Packaging Project down, because he was offended by some Debian users. Well, this is a pity. But as long as these unstable packages are there in the stable tree people like me might think that they ARE indeed the stable version and download the entire 80 megs, only to be very disappointed. I would suggest that you rather remove all the files and replace them by a README that explains why they are not there. Maybe then someone else will take up the job and package KDE 2 for potato... (Not me. I've got no clue how to build Debian packages.) Regards, Johannes

Re: Debian Potato Packages - steve - 2000-10-25

Anybody know more about these potato packages? I had heared that they are the full final version but you will get "symbols missing" errors at run time. Anybody baked a correct set of potato packages yet?

Re: Debian Potato Packages - mcking - 2000-10-25

It would also be nice if they would put a Packages.gz file in the appropriate Debian directories so that we could just apt-get the packages.

Re: Debian Potato Packages - steve - 2000-10-27

Just wanted to comment that I got the potato packages last night from tdyc through dselect and they worked great, and they are the full 2.0 release. I had heared rumors that you get symbol errors at runtime but this wasn't the case, I had no problems. Just add deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato kde2 to your /etc/apt/sources.list and run dselect. Ivan recommends getting them this way, apparently he's had trouble keeping the KDE mirrors up to date in the past so he prefers people to pull the packages from tdyc. Good work Ivan. Cheers

Re: Debian Potato Packages - Johannes Rohr - 2000-10-28

Hm, after writing the above message I have found out that my problem is actually a different one: The debs on ftp.kde.org are indeed the stable version, but apt refused to install them because they depend on a libqt version which is not availabe. They want libqt >= .2.2.1-5 but the packaged version on ftp.kde.org is 2.2.1-4-potato-2.

RH7 qt-x11-2.2.1 package lost - Unai Uribarri - 2000-10-24

Where is the qt package for the redhat 7?

Re: RH7 qt-x11-2.2.1 package lost - Marcie - 2000-10-27

The only qt.... packages I can find for RH are for Rawhide, not RH7. Don't go loading the 2.2.1 sources and expect them to compile right -- they won't. RH7 uses a bogus developement gcc, as pointed out by Trolltech. The solution, if you want to build it yourself is to use the "kgcc" included with RH7. Set CC in your environment to kgcc and CXX to "kgcc -x c++" Feh. Took me a day to figure this out. The configure line looks like this: ./configure -gif -thread -system-jpeg -platform redhat-kgcc -marcie.

Re: RH7 qt-x11-2.2.1 package lost - Marcie - 2000-10-27

Whups! Forgot the platform file. /usr/local/qt/configs/redhat-kgcc-shared (or whatever) should look just like linux-g++-shared, with the first few lines reading: # Compiling INTERFACE_DECL_PATH = . SYSCONF_CXX = kgcc -x c++ SYSCONF_CC = kgcc

Well, sorry but it does not work that well over .. - Jarek Luberek - 2000-10-25

here. Checked autoconf, egcs and automake versions. Installed according to the installation instructions. I have to say, it used to work better with the snapshots back in september. Now, fonts are screwed up, knode crashes on downloading unread articles. I'm back on mozilla since kmail does not seem to send url:s correctly and I'm tired of bold large fonts in konqueror (and kmail). Considering that this was a clean make of kde-2.0 release, I'll advise you people to wait for 2.1 in march. /jarek

I still can't view jpg and gif file even though I already compile QT and the source again with flags you mention above. I don't know why. Do you know something wrong? Thanks Jamal

Yes, I have this problem also. I initially read it was (or might have been) due to having su to root then installing/upgrading the packages. I re-did the install as root (not su'ed to root) and it fixed it....for a while. Now I get it about 75% of login attempts (as non-root). NOW though, I get booted back to the log in screen if I log in as anyone but root. Arg!! I'm installed KDE2 before with out trouble.

Can't get it to run =(! - Janne - 2000-10-25

i'm running SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional. I did a fresh install yesterday (had some problems with previous installation), I upgraded to Xfree 4.0.1 and I upgraded my video-cards drivers, so I could get X up & running. It works now. Then I downloaded & installed QT 2.2.1 with exception handling disabled. Everything works so far. Then I installed KDE1 with Yast to see that does it work. Yep, it does. Then I install KDE2 SuSE7.0 RPM's with Yast. First, I install Kde2supp, then kde2libs, then everything else (except Koffice, didn't have the time to download it). Everything went fine. When I reboot, I go to the KDE Login Manager, and both KDE1 and KDE2 are available as desktop environment. I choose KDE2 and login.... The screen goes black and.... I go back to the login screen =(! What am I doing wrong? KDE1 works fine. When I ran SuSE 6.4 I tried one of the KDE2 betas. I simply installed it from KDE, and typed KDE2 in shell, and it booted up fine (of course it was unstable and slow since it was beta desktop running inside another desktop, but I just wanted to see that what it looks like). I tried that with KDE2 final, and I got these error-messages: ksplash: error in loading sharedlibraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: minimumSizeHint__C7QDialog kdeinit: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdecore.so.3: undefined symbol: startsWith__C7QStringRC7QString knotify: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefin ed symbol: minimumSizeHint__C7QDialog ktip: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: event__9QLineEditP6QEvent Session management error: networkIdsList argument is NULL ksmserver: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdecore.so.3: und efined symbol: new_metaaccess__11QMetaObjecti Plese be patient with me, I'm not actually a Linux-guru yet...

Remark: I heard of someone who had the same problem and solved it. He compiled the qtlib with the no-opengl option and it worked. I guess it has something to do with the graphics card.

Re: Can't get it to run =(!: Try using SuSE RPMs? - Paul Leopardi - 2000-10-26

Have you downloaded and installed all of the relevant SuSE 7.0 RPMs including libs, qt2, localized and kde2? Here is the way I installed KDE 2.0 on my machine. This may or may not work for you. I am still using the old KDE kdm and not the new one and I have yet to figure out all the post-installation steps. 1. Start with an up-to-date SuSE 7.0 with KDE 1.1.2 installed (in /opt/kde) and working. Update all relevant packages using http://www.suse.com/en/support/download/updates/70_update.html 2. Read ftp://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/rpm/SuSE/README 3. Obtain all relevant RPMs including libs/*.rpm qt2/*.rpm andkde2/*.rpm from ftp://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/rpm/SuSE/7.0-i386/ or a mirror as per http://www.kde.org/mirrors.html For SuSE 6.4, the libs/*.rpm update ALSA as needed by KDE 2.0 4. Make sure to also obtain your language RPMs from ftp://ftp.kde.org/stable/2.0/distribution/rpm/SuSE/localized 5. Leave KDE: su to root and then run init 2 to go back to shell mode. 6. Run yast as root. 7. In YAST, go to Choose/Install Packages -> Install Packages and install all packages obtained in steps 3 and 4, starting with libs, qt2, localized then kde2. KDE2 installs into /opt/kde2. The original KDE packages are left untouched. YAST will automatically run SuSEconfig. For more details, especially if you are installing KDE 2.0 for the first time, see YAST details below. 8. Init 3 to get back to kdm. 9. If kde2 appears as a choice in kdm, log in using kde2 and enjoy. If not: 9.1. Using kdm, login as root using kde (ie. KDE 1.1.2) 9.2. In KDE, in kcontrol, go to Applications -> Login Manager 9.3. In Login Manager, add the choice kde2 and leave kde as is. 9.4. Log out. 9.5. You should now be able to log in using kde, kde2 or other window managers. 10. KDE2 may not know your old KDE settings. You can import settings from KDE to KDE2 by running old and new programs side by side. 11. You may need to edit .bash, etc. When I determine what you must change, I will add this to the instructions. YAST details Based on http://lists.suse.com/archives/suse-linux-e/2000-Oct/1703.html by Jerry L Kreps (jerrykreps@jlkreps.net) 1 Run YAST without a CD in the CDROM. When the 'SOURCE:" prompt comes up press the return key. You are presented with several sources. Choose 'Directory' and select the directory where you have your downloaded RPMs. 2 If you are installing KDE 2.0 for the first time, you need to take account of dependencies. You can discover the dependencies by using kpackage. First load all RPMs that were listed as dependencies in the main RPMs. In using YAST, if you select some RPMs into install and then go to another directory or subdirectory you lose those prior selections. This turns out to be a good thing because the only way you can control the sequence of installation is to do them in groups Here is the sequence Jerry discovered. Mark: libmng.rpm liblcms.rpm openssl.rpm Press F10 Mark: qtlib2.rpm (It may show as already being installed. If so, reinstall it anyway) Press F10 Mark: qtman2.rpm qtext2.rpm Press F10 Mark: qtdevel2.rpm Press F10 Mark: ksupp2.rpm Press F10 Mark: klibs2.rpm Press F10 Mark: kbase2.rpm Press F10 Mark: kde2dn.rpm and all the other k*.rpms Press F10 When the files are done installing press 'ESC' to the previous screen and select "Main Menu" When the installation scripts (SuSEConfig, etc.) finsh, press 'Exit" Please let me know if these instructions work, and if not, where they fail.

Re: KDE 2.0 is great but still buggy! - Malcolm Agnew - 2000-10-25

The KDE2 binaries for SuSE 7.0 (as did the beta's) install without any problems. But... The old bugs are mostly still there and some new ones too. 1. Kcontrol crashes immediately (this has been reported many times on the KDE bug pages) 2. Konqueror and Netscape malfunction with a html submit button (i.e. kwm problem) (reported). 3.KDM login window doesn't accept shutdown - the button is disabled (new bug - the beta's worked). 4.kspread doesn't crash as often as it did but makes an extremely unfinished impression. But ... Yes certainly very [very++] impressive. Pity that the PR work is only self congratulating and that there is apparently no one ever who is willing to answer problems as is common with other open source projects beginning with UNIX itself in the early 70's. Malcolm

Re: KDE 2.0 is great but still buggy! - ac - 2000-10-25

Of course KDE2 was not released with a KControl that crashes immediately. Your problems must be related to your system. Try deleting your .kde, it may have been corrupted by the betas you put on your system.

Tried that - but kcontrol still crashes. Also removed all kde kde2 .kde* files but kcontrol still crashes. Also tried making qt from source. I can change my preferences by avoiding kcontrol of course

<p>I have to agree, especially about Konqueror. I had high hopes of finally being able to ditch Netscape, but I don't think it's quite good enough yet. Doesn't seem so great to me - Anonymous - 2000-10-25

First I though: "Finally, KDE 2 is stable." So I downloaded all those KDE RPMs. But then I realize there are tons of dependancies. Even Gnome doesn't have that much! A few hours later, KDE is finally installed (with some --force and --nodeps). First I tried to run Konqueror from Gnome 1.2. I see Konqueror's main window, but then it gave an error message about wrong directory and crashes. I tried it again, but this time it instantly crashes without showing the main window at all! So I tried some apps from kdeutils. They are definitely better than KDE 1's kdeutils, but not great. kdeaddutils is probably the worst software package available! KPaint is still unfinished. Then I tried KWord. It doesn't work: it crashes instantly. Same story for the rest of KOffice. Thank you for so many apps but I will stick to Gnome with some KDE apps around. I just don't see why the press release is saying so many things that are too good to be true. It looks like a merge of M$-style advertisements and spam. No, this is not flame.

<i>A few hours later, KDE is finally installed (with some --force and --nodeps).</i><br><br> This clearly indicates some installation problems, you should never use --force and --nodeps unless you really know that you have the right stuff installed manually (without RPM noticing), also respecting the used compiler. <br><br> <i>KPaint is still unfinished.</i> <br><br> KPaint isn't even released as part of KDE2!<br><br> <i>Then I tried KWord.<br> It doesn't work: it crashes instantly.<br> Same story for the rest of KOffice.</i> <br><br> Well, you should really try to install KDE2 properly. No apps are supposed to crash and for sure not right on startup.

Re: Doesn't seem so great to me - Anonymous - 2000-10-25

KPaint *is* part of KDE 2 (part of kdeaddutils). Unless if kdeaddutils isn't part of KDE 2. <I>&gt; Well, you should really try to install KDE2 properly. > No apps are supposed to crash and for sure not right on startup.</I> Everything is in the right place. QT 2.2.1, kdelibs, kdelibs-sound, kdebase, koffice, etc. Everything just crash. Or is it because I run it from Gnome? (very unlikely)

Re: Doesn't seem so great to me - ac - 2000-10-26

kdeaddutils isn't part of KDE 2, so there.

You didn't say which distribution you are using. Is it Red Hat? SuSE? <br> What exactly was your starting point? Which version of which distribution? Which KDE and QT packages did you already have installed? <br> Which RPMs did you install? What was the URL? Did you install everything from all relevant subdirectories (eg. qt2, libs, localized, kde2 for SuSE RPMs) ? <br> How did you install the packages? Did you deinstall anything before you started? <br> Are you running kdm? <br> I have written some very detailed instructions for installing SuSE 6.4 and SuSE 7.0 RPMs for KDE 2.0 and would be willing to share them with you if you want to test them.

Some problems =( - Adi Wibowo - 2000-10-25

Hi, I download tar source from http://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/kde/stable/2.0/distribution/tar/generic/src/ today (25/10) and build it. It work well. But when I open KDE Control Center, the front page tell me that KDE Version is 2.0pre. Is it true? Did I download the wrong version? And several times, when i close some programs (kcontrol, kfmclient) they raise box that told me about SIGSEVS or anything like that (sorry =)) randomly. I also change my background, but suddenly everything was gone (panel, icon) just plain white background. I exit from xserver using ctrl-alt-Bkspace and restart it (startx), it still white background and no box telling me that initialization is in progress as usually. How could all of this happened?

See the message up there - Okeo - 2000-10-25

The "2.0pre" string is just something they forgot to change for the release. I noticed the same thing yesterday, and I was relieved to find that this is indeed the case. I have the same problems with kcontrol on exit... Weird, isn't it? Okeo

It's _very far_ from being stable, and this sucks. - Jerome Kalifa - 2000-10-25

I don't know if you guys are running a time to market race or something, or if you were simply tired of waiting, yet KDE 2.0 "stable" is amazingly unstable (Gnome 1.0 style, if you see what I mean...), and would have been much less unstable if bugfixing development and beta testing had been going on for at least one more month. Oh, I know, you may answer: "at some point you got to release", but it was just too early. I'm personally very disappointed.

Gnome FUD? - Zank Frappa - 2000-10-25

I have built KDE 2 from sources and I find it very stable. You people comparing it to Gnome 1.0 must be insane, they shouldn't be mentioned on the same day. A tip for newbies: To see what's going on when you run KDE you can do this: 1. shut down any xdm/kdm/gdm 2. from a terminal run "xinit" (rename any .xinitrc or .xserverrc files in your homedir) 3. You should now have started X with just an xterm window 4. type "startkde" 5. KDE should start up and you can see all messages in the xterm

Re: Gnome FUD? - Jerome Kalifa - 2000-10-25

I'm not a newbie, it ain't Gnome FUD (Emacs is my desktop anyway), and here we observe the unstability on several different linux distros, including RH, MdK, Slack and Debian, with both packaged binaries or recompiled versions (on Slack), and the conclusion is unanymous: interesting, but _not usable yet_. Period. This is true at least for the desktop, konqueror, and the graphics tools. Now, sorry if you think it's just an anti-KDE worldwide conspiracy.

Re: Gnome FUD? - jd - 2000-10-26

I don't understand how you can claim "unanimous" with so many people saying it's great. Your "GNOME 1.0" remark really borders on flame-bait in my book. The KDE2 pre-alpha builds from back in March were better than my impression of GNOME 1.0. I'm compiling from source on Mandrake 7.1 and, so far (only gotten the base KDE built so far), I'm stunned! The improvement over beta-5 is simply amazing (and I thought beta-5 was pretty good). Personally, I feel the KDE team has delivered far more than I ever expected and I am *really* pleased with the results. Now, with so many more people using and testing KDE, I wouldn't be surprised if the remaining problems are fixed very soon. (If you don't remember KDE 1.0, it was good but KDE 1.1.2 was a lot better.)

Re: Gnome FUD? - Richard - 2000-10-26

Hi guys and gals, I think I am making the right decision to wait untill Mandrake 7.2 is released. I wonder if the KDE teams were testing this "stable" release for bugs and such on which kernel version?? For them to have worked as hard as they did, and even delayed it and all, that they would throw up their hands and say "whatever, give it to them anyway". I want to believe that it was/is as stable and polished as it can be and possibly the 2.2.17 kernel and updated libraries will give KDE 2.0 that stablized edge that everyone was expecting. I hope I am right, though I have been downloading the KDE 2.0 off and on all day, maybe I will abort and see what the KDE 1.99 (?) is like with the enhancements for the Mandrake 7.2 release for the retail stores. If it is buggy, I'm sure the team will have a patch real soon for us all. I have faith. Richard : )~

KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Fernando Sancho - 2000-10-26

I have installed the rpm packages for RH7 and qt2.2.1 rpm packages. When i login from gdm the Xserver restarts and return to login screen. The extrange thing is thtat all KDE applications works fine if they're called from Gnome or other WM. I have 2.2.16 kernel, XFree4.0.1 with TNT2 drivers v0.9.5

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Janne - 2000-10-26

Exacly the same problem I have! Make sure that you have all the necessary files. I don't have libmng.so.0 (just downloaded it), and that might be causing problems for me. I know more tomorrow that does it work or not. Beta-KDE2 on my computer works though.

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Fernando Sancho - 2000-10-26

Nop, i have installed libmng. i had not any dependencies problem installing the rpm packages.

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Nandagopal Kirubanandan - 2000-10-26

Make sure that gdm is launching the right script for kde2. In my fresh installation of RH7, it was trying to launch exec "/usr/bin/startkde2" which of course doesn't work check the file /usr/share/apps/switchdesk/Xclients.kde2 and make sure that it says something like #!/bin/sh # Created by Red Hat Desktop Switcher export PATH=$PATH export KDEDIR=/usr/lib exec /usr/bin/startkde Hope that this helps

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Fernando Sancho - 2000-10-27

ok, i have changed switcdesk's XClient file, and now it seems to work, but I only get the initial KDE's splashscreen. The system doesn't hangs but KDE doesn't starts, i have to press Crtl-Alt-BackSpace to restart X. I cant understand it.

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Marcie - 2000-10-27

You may have a problem with qt-2.2.1. If you build it by hand with the gcc provided with RH7, it will not work. See Troll Tech's boards for comments.

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - Fernando Sancho - 2000-10-27

Ok, i have installed all packages from RPM, qt, libmbg and KDE, i have modified switchpanel scripts, and KDE still doesn't work. I only get the KDE's splashscreen. Looking in a console with ps command i can see variuos kdeinit process, one of them is "kdeinit: Starting up..." but KDE never starts up. My system doesn't hangs. If I start another WM i can run KDE applications, except kfm and KDE help pages.

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - eXtremist - 2001-03-20

Dude..Don't feel so bad.. I couldn't get KDE to work either. Exact same problem you have (I'm running RH7 too). There should be better documentation on the KDE webpage, if you ask me. Now, not only can I not use KDE 2, but I can't use the older version of KDE (yeah, the RPMs broke that too). Guess I'll be a GNOME user from here on in.. :) Good old friendly GNOME.. GNOME hasn't broken my system. To hell with KDE!!

Re: KDE2 Doesn't work on my Red Hat 7 - francine broekhove - 2001-03-28

Hi dudez, i'm experiencing the gnome opposite to the above, and was going to try and install kde(2) from rpms, when i stumbled over libstdc++ (version 2.10 needed, 2.96 in rh7). I - newbie - bit a piece out of my wooden (..) table - and installed GNOME instead. You seemed to have a gnome working, is it starting in runlevel 5 using gdm/xdm/xfs etc. etc.?? When i use gdm it keeps returning to the login screen whatever i do. I've read about it, rpm'd back and forth (over 40 by now), config'd here 'n there and now this girl is drooolin by the sight of Apple's beautiful Cube alternative and according to my human environment i'm no longer sane. Either that or back - back to pristine rh7 - no experiments nothing - just wait ... and hope for better wheater ... birds outside ... stroking my apple .. mumbling

Desktop disappears?! - Espen K - 2000-10-26

This has happened to me twice in less than two days: When I start KDE2 ("startx") Kicker boots, but there are no desktop?! Its all gray. Some applications still start (like Konquer, thats why Im able to write this now), but several of the "preferences" apps wont start anymore, like "Keyboard Layout". I have absolutely no clue as to how to fix this, The last time it happened I created a new user, and moved all the personal files (no system files, nothing fro ".kde" etc) from the old to the new account. However this is obviously not a good solution. I've installed the "final" RPMs for rh70 on a clean, non KDE1.2/gnome RH70. Please, does anyone know that I'm talking about here, and - most important - hav some suggestions as to how to "unlock" this situation? KDE2 is quite simply the greatest desktop Ive ever seen & used - when it works. The network transparency is beatiful. However, an experience like this makes me scared!

Re: Desktop disappears?! - Espen K - 2000-10-26

To answer my own post here :-) the tip for newbies, from Zank Frappa a couple of postings above were helpful: It seems like it was a crash of the DCOP server that caused the hangup. Removed the file .DCOPserver_<hostname> and my desktop reappeared. Such a quick fix once you know it... But this should have been cleaned up automatically...!

Re: Desktop disappears?! - yngve - 2000-10-27

This happened to me once I was logging out from KDE2 and got a bit impatient and pressed log out twice. This results in some processes still running until the next time you log in. Therefore you should kill these processes before logging in again(everything that starts with K is a good guess).

A good place to start would be <a href="http://www.kde.org/install-source.html">http://www.kde.org/install-source.html</a>. Those are the installation instructions. Also check out the mailing list archives at lists.kde.org and the newsgroup comp.windows.x.kde. You may find useful info there. <p> You may also want to read the LinuxPlanet <a href="http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reviews/2531/1/">review</a> for some hints, such as compiling Qt for maximum speed (first seen here on the dot). In my personal experience, compiling with the right options has made kde much faster. I don't think I'll ever install a binary again ;) <p> Good Luck!

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - tq123 - 2000-10-27

I don't know of a list, but I picked up tips from around the net that seemed appropriate (I'm not an expert, myself). I think the most important thing is to disable exceptions when compiling Qt. See <a href="http://dot.kde.org/971098890/971103495/971105912/971161255/">this thread</a> for more info. <p> I also increased the optimization level from O2 to O6. It takes more time to compile with O6 and some people would say it's a waste of time, but it's working well here. Your call. You can disable exceptions and change the O level by editing the file $QTDIR/configs/yourplatform ($QTDIR is the directory where the new Qt is installed and yourplatform is probably "linux-g++-shared") and looking for lines under the comment "# Compiling application source". Mine look like this: <p><pre> SYSCONF_CXXFLAGS = -pipe -O6 -fno-exceptions -mpentium<br> SYSCONF_CFLAGS = -pipe -O6 </pre><p> When you configure KDE2, you will probably want to optimize for a pentium and disable the debug code. The command will look something like:<br> <pre> CXXFLAGS=' -mpentium' ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde --disable-debug </pre> <p> Compiling takes a *long* time. On my P2-300, it took hours to compile and install KDE2. It was worth it, though :) <p> Once you've compiled and installed kde2, you need to set up your login manager to let you use it. I would look at the <a href="http://www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html">document</a> the kde folks prepared regarding this. Compiling for the first time is a bit overwhelming, but don't worry... you may struggle a bit this time, but you'll get it going! <p> Happy KDEing!

What can I do? Where is the error? These are some of lines error that I receive not in order: ......(first are this function) cpp output pipe has been closed make[2]: Error 1................ .... :( help me!

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - tq123 - 2000-10-28

I'd like to help you, but I'm really not experienced in these matters. :( I'll do my best... two heads are better than one, as they say. <p> Let's start at the beginning. Did you set your QTDIR to the appropriate directory? Let's say you want to install Qt into /usr/local/qt-2.2.1, you would have to type: <pre> export QTDIR='/usr/local/qt-2.2.1' </pre> <p> Alternatively, many people choose to create a symlink to the directory where Qt resides and call it /usr/local/qt. If you do, set your QTDIR to that instead. <p> OK, assuming QTDIR is set and you've modifed the configs to your taste, you need to run "configure". It looks like you've already done that, though. The command looked something like this, right?: <pre> ./configure -sm -gif -system-jpeg -no-opengl </pre> <p> If configure worked ok, then all that's left is to type "make" and wait for Qt to build. If configure gave your errors, you probably need to install some other library that Qt depends on. By the way, I'm also running Mandrake 7.1. It does work, but you may have to install some additional libraries from the second cd. I don't recall having any problems once I got configure to work right. <p> Maybe it would help if you post a little more detail about what went wrong. If you send more of the error message and describe what you did, then maybe it will give some clues. Even if it doesn't, then at least I could help you search for more info from other sources. It would also be worth checking if you have downloaded the right file (I've made that mistake before :). You want qt-2.2.1. It should be in the same directory as the kde stuff. <p> Well, let me know how it goes. I'm sure you'll get it going eventually!

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - tq123 - 2000-10-28

Well, if configure worked ok then you probably don't need to install additional libraries. It also appears that you have the correct version of Qt. You mentioned kwin, does that mean you're compiling kde2 and qt is already compiled?? You do need to add the -no-opengl flag when compiling Qt, or you'll have problems later. <p> If Qt's installed and you're working on kde then maybe you're not compiling in the correct order? kdesupport must be compiled and installed first. Then kdelibs must be compiled and installed second. After that, you can compile and install in any order. For any of this to work, QTDIR and KDEDIR must be set. Also, don't forget that /usr/local/qt/lib (or whatever directory you used) must be added to /etc/ld.so.conf. Once you change /etc/ld.so.conf, be sure to run "ldconfig". <p> Hmmm, I can't think of anything else right now. Hopefully you'll get it running before Mandrake 7.2 comes out with kde2 included :) <p> Good Luck!

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - Miky - 2000-10-28

No I haven't already compiled QT :-) Now I have reinstalled Mandrake 7.1 with X11 Dev library, in TroolTech site in the FAQ I read that for compiling QT must be installed this library and infact the error that I have is some about X11 :-) that before I haven't, I have also install libjpeg, libgif, libpng and libz I think now is all ready for compiling with success:-). <BR><BR> Last questions: <BR><BR> - I would make a script for do all this night while I am sleeping :D I can? <BR> - How I can see the version of my libpng? And in case this is version 1.0.8 i change this with 1.0.7 (how? i have the source)! <BR> - What about libmng? (I have the source) <BR> - In QT site the documentation http://doc.trolltech.com/install-x11.html suggest to change file .profile (in my case .bash-profile) for setting QTDIR and other var is the same of ld.so.conf? <BR> - I hope tu use this string for QT : CXXFLAGS=' -mpentium' ./configure -sm -gif -system-jpeg -system-libpng -system-libmng -no-opengl and for KDE package : CXXFLAGS=' -mpentium' --prefix=/opt/kde2 --disable-debug Are OK? <BR> I hope that's all, really thx tq123! :-)

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - tq123 - 2000-10-29

I'm glad you've figured it out! You could certainly make a script... building each package requires the same steps, so it should be fairly easy. <p> As for checking what version of libpng you're using, one way would be to use an rpm query: <pre> rpm -qa | grep libpng </pre> <p> Mandrake installs libpng in /usr/lib, so you could also "ls /usr/lib/libpng*". I can't remember if I used the libpng flag, so I don't know what version is needed. The kde installation instructions don't indicate that you have to. <p> I, personally, don't have a libmng installed. I don't even know what it is, but it doesn't appear to be necessary for kde2. <p> The QTDIR should be /usr/local/qt, for example, while in /etc/ld.so.conf you would put "/usr/local/qt/lib" and then run /sbin/ldconfig (works here, anyway :) <p> Your configure commands look good to me, but I don't know what libmng is. What does it do? Anyway, it sounds like you're ready to start compiling. I hope it goes well. Let me know what happens.

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - Miky - 2000-10-30

Ok thx tq123, QT compiled. <BR><BR> But now I receive an error with KdeSupport: <BR> library iostream.h not found. :-( <BR><BR> Who can post a list of "ALL LIBRARY" need for compiling right KDE2? <BR><BR> Bye. :-)

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - jamal - 2000-10-31

iostream.h is a standard I/O stream library for c++ . It should come with your compiler (gcc or g++) when you first installed it. The default location is /usr/include. <br> I am not familiar with configure file but I think it should detect whether all the required libraries and header files is available or not.

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! How I can install? - Todd Benson - 2001-12-10

Hi You might have to start fresh...it has happened to me that I got dependency errors I couldn't figure out, and the fresh install fixed things. Normally though, errors like that are because the rpms were not installed in the correct order. execute these from a terminal window from the directory immediately above the directories listed here: rpm -U qt2/* for the files in the qt2 directory then do rpm -i libxmlkde/* rpm -i pcre/* rpm -U kdelibs/* kdebase/* rpm -U kdeutils/* and then any other packages you want such as rpm -U kdegames/* rpm -U kdevelop/* your distribution probably has KDE users manual. www.kde.org is good to look at. http://userlocal.com.articles/kde22fromsource.shtml is a good article Right now I am trying to do the same as you, only from source...I am getting very frustrated at times, but I learn something every time I try, and some day it will all come together...so much to learn, eh? Good luck.

Kicker Crashes - Enix - 2000-10-27

i downloaded the src .tars and compiled / installed them. then i use "xinit", and from there typed "startkde &" Kde starts up, But then Kicker crashes, 100% of the time. the little hint window comes up, but without a hint. Kdesktop works, but once i try to open the trash (its the only icon that shows up), KDesktop freezes. Does anyone know what im doing wrong?

Arranging icons on desktop - D. D. Brierton - 2000-10-27

Am I missing something obvious, or should I send this in as a wishlist? --- I can't find a way to arrange the desktop icons to my own satisfaction. There seems to be no "snap to grid" setting; if I right-click on the desktop and choose "Line up Icons" they are left-aligned by their text-width, as opposed to being centered which is what I would have expected; if I choose "Arrange Icons" they are put into the physical alignment I want but are rearranged in order. What I want is that they should be kept in the order I have roughly placed them in but aligned along a grid in which what counts is their icon, not their text width.

Well maybe you should upgrade to Windows XP then! Shmuck!

Re: Arranging icons on desktop - Gary Reynolds - 2004-10-25

How do I make the Icons on my desktop smaller, and hold them at that size. I have changed everything I know to change in Control Panel, Display, and settings, etc.. and can change them to smaller size,, but, when I Apply, and return to Desktop OR reboot, and come back up the Icons are large again. Help, please !! Thanks

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - James Alan Brown JAB Computers Bristol UK - 2000-10-29

Dear KDE Team, First of all I wish to make it quite clear that I am indeed a very strong supporter of KDE. Regarding the release of KDE2 though I wish to make the following comments:- Geometry: What the hell happened to being able to set the window size to maximum? Do you really think that each time we open any program we wish to click the maximised button and that we don't require a default full screen view of say a word processor or the ability to save a maximised setting? This was one of the best features of KDE1.1.2 over the alternative Gnome desktop! The new File Manager: The biggest problem is in trying to set and save your customise default view colors and settings. Example background color settings in different windows and icon layout views that get lost on closedown of File Manager no mater what you do with the save view settings! Sound problems: My Yamaha XG sound works really well on KDE1.1.2 but on KDE2 it's distorted and crackles and pops and as for the multi-media players the MIDI is totally useless! I am using the same Alsa drivers that work very well in KDE1.1.2 so what has changed! In general now the control of toolbar Icon positions, background color, window shading and window layout is very poor or missing compared to KDE1.1.2 and it seems now with no save or make new theme settings! What happened to all the new vertical/horizontal color shading settings that was talked about time and time again? I can't help but wonder if KDE2 got rushed out as a counter to the new Gnome desktop rather that being fully thought out! My gut feeling is that this present release will harm the good name of KDE long-term. For Info: System: A-open AX59 pro Motherboard, AMD K6 III 400, 256 Meg P100 SDRAM, SuSE Linux 6.4 and 16 Meg Voodoo Banshee 800x600 at 24 bit. KDE2 was installed on a total clean re-formatted new install without any KDE 1 files on system. It proved to be very unstable and Koffice crashed out several times even trying to do very basic word processor tasks. There is no way it would be of any real working use to me in it's present state! I have now re-formatted and re-installed KDE1.1.2 and all works fine again! Regards, James JAB Computers Bristol UK

Re: KDE 2.0 is Out! - Marc Mertens - 2000-10-30

Congratulations, The moment KDE2.0 came out I grabbed the sources, compiled it and had a great desktop running. It is really an improvement on the previous version. Now for the dark side, it seems that a lot of old KDE programs don't compile correctly on KDE 2.0(my own problem is klyx , I know I have kword but this is nove very good at math). Are there any plans to make them compatible with KDE2.0? I known if you want to innovate you have to break with the past and you have rightly do so. But it will be a good idea if there was a list of all the programs that don't work anymore with 2.0 and if they are plans to upgrate these programs. Any how big thanks for any one involved with the KDE project
