Friday, 21 June 2002  |  Numanee

The latest issue of Kernel Cousin KDE is out. This week read about the KDE 3.1 release schedule and feature plan, KOffice news, Kicker Xinerama tweaks, KDE/GNOME interoperability, KDE on HP/UX, and kde-edu discussions. Kudos to the KC KDE Team!

KDE on HPUX update - Ravi - 2002-06-21

Actually, I have all of kdelibs and kdebase compiled on HPUX too. The problem mentioned in KC39 was solved once I realized that HPUX11 uses comdat linkage which requires explicit template instantiation. (Thanks to John Anglin for pointing this out.) C++ has always had a hard time on HPUX because of a lot of screwups, not the least of which is the unruly beast of an aCC compiler they ship. However, I have decided to stop work on the 32-bit port as I do not fully understand HP's (traditional) executable format. The 64-bit executable format is the one we all know best: elf. So, I plan to concentrate on the 64-bit port which does not require many of the workarounds from the 32-bit port because hppa64 supports weak symbols. Of course, this means no ports for HPUX 10.20. The major problem with the 64-bit port is that the toolchain (binutils, gcc and friends) themselves have rather rocky CVS mailine trees at the moment. I hope to have a fully functional 64-bit KDE 3.x available within a couple of weeks of stabilization of the gcc hppa64 mainline. I am looking for volunteers to try and compile my ported sources. If you are interested, please drop me a line; you can find my email address from the link in KC39. Ravi

Are you still working on KDE for HPUX? I'd like to lend assistance if possible.

I’m interested in trying to install on hpux11 the K Desktop Environment! (19 January 2007). If you are still working on this project I’d like to get involved.

Krita/Krayon? - Rk - 2002-06-23

Can anyone tell me what happenend to this attempt to provide a raster drawing program for KDE?

Re: Krita/Krayon? - David Faure - 2002-06-24

Krita is (will be) pixel-based image manipulation (think photoshop, gimp etc.). And it lacks developers - not much happened on it for quite some time. Krayon is the new vector-drawing app - and it's in KOffice-1.2 (beta2, very soon now).

Re: Krita/Krayon? - ac - 2002-06-24

That's Karbon. Krayon and Krita are the same thing. Mosfet has a GIMP-like for KDE but it's not released.

Re: Krita/Krayon? - David Faure - 2002-06-24

Duh. I misread krayon as karbon (heh, most "crayons" use carbon ;) Yes, Krayon was renamed Krita (stupid trademarks).
