KOffice 2 Alpha 8 Reviewed

KOffice, like most KDE applications, has the unique selling point that the same codebase can be compiled and run on various platforms. The latest KOffice alpha release has attracted extra attention since it ships Windows and Macintosh binaries. This naturally means a much larger audience will be able to try it out and kick the tires. Techworld has an article up where they give a good overview and plenty of screenshots. Have you already tried out a KOffice alpha release?

How far have table support improved in kword. Last time I checked it was broken. I can't think of a word processor that does not make good tables. Any idea ?

Table support was removed and will very likely not be reintroduced for 2.0. This time we want to do it right.

I've installed and tested KDE for windows at my job (love having kate at hand).
It is still a bit chunky and have lots of bugs (acess to drive A:, for example), but shows a lot of potential.
I just have some wishes I would like to see happen one day:
- konsole for DOS - yeah right, it would be great, even that I do not think it's plausible
- organize packages better. Some things like find files could be moved to an utilities package
- systemsettings: this is an old one, I can't the mouse to use double click without having to mess with config files. Can't we just read windows option and use the same behavior?
- man, where is Quanta+? :(

Overall looks good. Thanks to all that are making this port become reality.

"Thanks to all that are making this port become reality."

Your're welcome. You'll also say "thank you" in a practical way, if you report some of the issues and describe wishes on the bugs.kde.org, and/or discuss them on the kde-windows mailing list (http://www.kde.org/mailinglists/). You'll also discover that most of your points are already on the TODO list of developers, or they are just aware of them.

Regarding konsole, we're depending on the native shell, so all you can have is http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Windows/Tools#Console_2
