KDE and Ovi Sprint attendees

The weekend before Qt Developer Days 2010 in Munich, Nokia invited thirteen members of the KDE community to get together in their offices in that same city for a developer sprint. The topic was Ovi and KDE, specifically how they can work together to widen adoption for both communities, both from a software development perspective and from a purely collaborative effort perspective. The developers were also invited to the main Qt Developer Days (DevDays) event too.

KDE recently attended SoLiSC (website in Portuguese), a local free software meeting based in Florianópolis, Brazil. SoLiSC had been inactive since 2005, but in 2009 the Free Software Association of Santa Catarina (Associação Software Livre Santa Catarina) was created to revive it and succeeded in doing so in October this year. The aim of the Association is to create a permanent forum for the discussion of free software in the state of Santa Catarina.

Bretzn - simple and quick tied together

At the recent openSUSE Conference, Frank Karlitschek introduced a new KDE initiative intended to bring developers and users closer together, Bretzn. He admitted that they came up with the name Bretzn (a kind of German pretzel) only the day before the Saturday keynote, illustrating the speed and ease that are appropriate to the initiative.

Italian KDE blogger Giovanni Venturi will be presenting KDE software and Linux to attendees at the Rome Linux Day (website in Italian) on Saturday 23 October. If you are near the Italian capital tomorrow do drop by.

On a sunny September weekend in Cambridge, England, ten KDE and Telepathy developers met in the Collabora office to plan the future of Instant Messaging in KDE software. Once everyone had arrived, our host George Goldberg gave us an overview of the current state of the codebase, which parts are usable, which parts still need writing, and which parts were written years ago and need revision. This turned into a project management session to determine the order for getting things done, and a discussion about a release schedule that will make the project visible without tying it prematurely into compatibility guarantees that slow down development.

Solid is the part of the KDE Platform that handles interaction with hardware, making it easy for application developers to deal with things like network availability by abstracting underlying libraries within a familiar KDE-style API. As such it is an essential component across all kinds of KDE software. Solid is becoming a well- defined team within KDE; everybody is excited about attracting more developers interested in hardware support to the desktop, mobile devices, netbooks, media center and beyond. There are now quite a few developers working on Solid so it was a good time to get them all together for a sprint in Madrid, Spain. Read on for the full story.

In the Free Software ecosystem, nearly everybody has heard about KDE. People associate us with a great desktop environment and some interesting applications. On other desktops there may be installations of KDE software, but those people may not know a single KDE application. This is why Torsten Rahn and Bastian Holst went to INTERGEO this year to present Marble.

Sunday is the first KWin Bug Day (10th day of the 10th month 2010 - easy to remember!). KWin is a vital part of the KDE Platform and used by all software running in a Plasma Workspace. However, with the latest influx of bug reports it is becoming increasingly difficult for regular contributors like Martin Grässlin and the KWin team to keep up. This is where you can help with squashing those bugs!

The Desktop Summit is a co-located event which features the yearly contributor conferences of the GNOME and KDE communities, GUADEC and Akademy. Next year the conference will take place from 6 to 12 August, 2011 in the city center of Berlin at the Humboldt University, Unter den Linden. The event will feature keynotes, talks, workshops and team building events.

KDE is very active in South America as any readers of the blogs at Live Blue will know already. The KDE Brazil team attended this year's FISL, one of the major free software events in South America, meeting up with some new users of KDE software and spreading the word of Konqui.
