LOL @ David Bishop!

Good one. :-)

by Russell Miller (not verified)

Heh. thanks. couldn't resist.

by GeekBoy (not verified)

Don't buy David a beer, buy him some soda. Just trust me on this :)

by David Bishop (not verified)

You're 100% correct. But I have to ask, how'd you know? I.e., who are you?

by Metrol (not verified)

It was a JOKE for crying out loud! Geeeesh.

I suppose I should be a little flattered by getting mentioned on KDE Traffic and all, but not like that. I was rather hopeful at the time that the comment would be seen as a trivial bit of fun, not as some kind of in depth criticism of anyone's use of language.

Furthermore, at the time I read that comment it looked to me as though a bit of humor was being attempted by "Joyful was this received". I thought I was just pointing out the humor in the post.

My apologies to anyone who found offense in this. None was intended.

Of course, now that my silly comment has been archived into KDE Traffic I'll be remembered as the grammar nazi beating up on non-English speaking folks committing to KDE. Perhaps this would have been better for all concerned had there been a reply posted to here on the Dot instead? Now both myself and Juergen have been rather singled out for reasons neither of us would have preferred.

by Russell Miller (not verified)

Sheesh, can't win for losing.

I didn't mean to cause offense, any more than you did. I thought the explanation was necessary on many levels, however. Non-native english speakers *will* make grammar errors, and sometimes it is hard to tell those apart from their style. Singling anyone out was not my intention. I included the smily as an integral part of your quote. The intended idea was "yes, this was a joke, but the explanation is probably a good idea". Time will tell if I made an error in judgement.

However, one might also note that your comment is also archived here on the dot, and it's probably easier to erase from kde-traffic archives than it is from here. A good rule of thumb is "if you don't want something you say to be posted inadvertently out of context, don't say it". Stuff, unfortunately, happens.

However, that being said, I'll go ahead and make a slight change to the post to make your intentions a part of the record as well.

> A good rule of thumb is "if you don't want something

Understood. I do stand by the comment I originally made, and being the habitual punner that I am, I'd probably do it all over again. Should probably check myself into a 12-step punning group. Oh, now wouldn't that be a group of people to get drunk with!

To avoid being called a hypocrite here, one minor clarification. I only meant to apologize for the intent or meaning of my post being misunderstood. As to the post itself, I stand firmly behind the silliness!

> I'll go ahead and make a slight change to the post
> to make your intentions a part of the record as well.

More than fair enough.

I just wanted it to be known that I wasn't trying to nit pick on anyone. Heck, if I'd be looking to do that, I'd have a much larger selection of targets amongst the native English speakers. Myself definitely included!

And lastly, I also wish to point out that I, like many others here, dearly appreciate the effort that is put into getting KDE Traffic together. Good fun reading every time, including this time around. Now to go run this issue through a real good grammar checker :)

by kidcat (not verified)

>[..] I'll be remembered as the grammar nazi [..]

No you won't! The only reason i didn't post something similar was because you got there first :-D

Humor we must understand-hrrm ;-)

"the grammar nazi"
lol

I gotta say that if English wasn't my native language and I was busy learning it I'd find your comment a little offensive. Everyone has a different sense of humor I guess..

by Xanadu (not verified)

> It was a JOKE for crying out loud! Geeeesh.

And, personally, I found it funny as hell! As another poster says (something like) "if I was only learning English, I might have taken offence". While he is right, I think that it still was funny as hell and worth noting in this context of a bunch of people from all over Earth gathered together to support the same "cause".

I'm a native English speaker, and I can easily say, the languange is a PITA. The way "Yoda" speaks (and is evident in other laguanges) makes a LOT more sense than saying the same thing in English.

I dunno. Maybe it's just me.

by kidcat (not verified)

Just me it is maybe :P

Why don't you reply to the dot comments directly on the dot? And do KDE traffic readers coming from elsewhere than the dot care about comments to comments on the dot? I don't think that this new section makes sense.

by Russell Miller (not verified)

It depends on what the comments are. Comments that I judge have an interest beyond the dot itself are apropos for that section. Notiice I only culled a couple out, there were plenty more that really didn't belong in kc-kde, imo.

Of course I am not perfect and can make errors in judgement. I want to give this a chance first before I judge it a success or failure.

Of course, if all of the opinions are as negative as the ones that have been posted here so far, it may not last long.

--Russell

by Apollo Creed (not verified)

I think it was a good idea. Sometimes really good comments are posted on the dot that deserve to be exposed in this way. Perhaps the possibility of being mentioned in KDE Traffic might even raise the average quality of dot comments. :)

by Russell Miller (not verified)

There may be other things that I can do to that end (helping to raise the average quality of dot posts). I'll have to give it some thought so that it won't be abused.

--Russell

by Waldo Bastian (not verified)

It might help to provide links to the actual d.k.o. threads you refer to.

Much of this section didn't make sense to me at all, maybe it helps if there is some context. (But then again, maybe it doesn't :-)

Cheers,
Waldo

by Russell Miller (not verified)

That's mostly because it's still fledgeling. I may end up giving interesting dot threads their own sections. I didn't this time because I only responded to comments under #50 is out. That is all under the same umbrella, so I really don't think that separate sections are appropriate. Perhaps that's why it really didn't make sense in its context - this time the aim was more like a FAQ than a thread.

> And do KDE traffic readers coming from elsewhere

Depends on the goal of KDE Traffic. On one hand if the goal is to only cover what developers are talking about, then the dot probably need not be covered.

On the other hand, if the goal is to attempt to track the overall discussion about KDE then I would argue that at some point you'd have to include the dot in there. A lot of discussion amongst end users with developers goes on here, and I would believe that to be of importance. Again, this depends on the goals of the project.

Me, I'm just a regular reader of it when I see an update mentioned on the dot here. Take it for what it's worth.

by Russell Miller (not verified)

In a very superficial manner, one could say the goal of KDE traffic is whatever I say it is :-) But that's not exactly a nice thing to do to contributors - they deserve consistency and fairness. So I'll expand further on what I'm trying to accomplish.

If you notice the posts/threads that I choose to report on, that may give you an idea of why adding the dot as well may actually further the goal I'm aiming for. I want to report on the high level steering discussions, not on the internal class implementation, individual bug reports, etc. Maybe by judicious use of this forum I can also help to influence the steering for the better. That remains to be seen. Since those steering discussions (ie, feature requests, feature implementation, high-level core and application architecture, etc) can also happen on the dot, it is logical to report on those discussions. It might even be logical to use IRC discussions as well. But I'm not sure I want to open that can of worms yet.

That's not to say I don't care about the internal class implementation - oh wait, I really don't. I'm perfectly competent to use the classes should I want to - I even have a couple of kde apps out there (one actually pretty decent but incomplete). But I'm more interested in what KDE can do for me, what I can do with KDE, what KDE will do for me in the future, and what decisions are being made that will influence those things. I suspect most readers of the KDE traffic newsletter are as well. If you want low level information, join the lists and read every post. :-)

Hope that helps.

For the update and thanks to all the KDE developers for doing all that =)

Also, mosfet wrote a thumbnail specification that is far faster, more specific, and easier to implement than the freedesktop.org one. KDE should switchto it.

check it out here: http://mosfet.org/prothumbnails/index.html

by anon (not verified)

This is very interesting. Could you send it to the KDE Developers list?

by Anonymous (not verified)

> a thumbnail specification that is far faster, more specific, and easier to implement

Your own opinion or are you just irritated by the exaggerated "Professional" in its title?

by Xanadu (not verified)

(and I don't mind being "me" here, Mr. Anonymous...)

> are you just irritated by the exaggerated "Professional" in its title?

Perhaps that is exactly what bothers you? Did you even bother to ask questions on how he knows/thinks that? Nope. You just launched into a PRO/HATE Mosfet thinkg for teh hell of it. I'd personally like to know why he/she/it feels the way he/she/it does about the software.

by KDE User (not verified)

> far faster

You have any measurements on that?

by kidcat (not verified)

Sometimes it is enough just to have a look at the code..

will the new konqueror support mng?

by Olaf Jan Schmidt (not verified)

Konqueror already supports mng since Qt 2.2, as the official mng page says: http://www.libpng.org/pub/mng/mngapbr.html

But Konqueror has problems displaying mng images when the embed tag is used, or when the URL of an mng image is typed in directly.

There is a already a bug report about this: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35232

Too bad they won't release Kexi. It really looked promising.
Will it be released separately at a later time?

Is Kontour included?

by Lucijan Busch (not verified)

hi,

that doesn't mean the end of kexi. as i have written in my mail to koffice-devel, we plan to release it seperatly in mid october and sync with koffice 1.4 again.

no idea to knotour though.

by Nicolas GOUTTE (not verified)

Kontour is dead and does not exist anymore. It has been replaced by Karbon.

Have a nice day/evening/night!
