KDE 2 Final Beta Preview is out!

The final beta preview of KDE 2, code named Kandidat, has been announced and is available for download(remember there are several ftp mirrors). It is now based on the final Qt 2.2 and and won't work with a Qt 2.2 beta.

Database access library

theKompany.com have announced KDB, an API for browsing and manipulating databases. KDB is LGPL, modular and even includes an I/O slave that enables SQL capabilities in Konqueror. KDB will be used as the backend for Rekall, a light weight personal DBMS system ala MS Access.

KDE packages already in Debian

Debian Weekly News confirms it: "KDE packages are pouring into Debian. All of the core of KDE is already present in unstable, and more packages are sure to follow. This unexpected turn of events is due to a change in the license of Qt 2.2 -- Troll Tech released it dual-licensed under the GPL -- the KDE licensing issue is finally resolved." They have a lot of catching up to do if the ~700 KDE apps catalogued by apps.kde.com are any indication.

KDE2 to be included in Debian GNU/Linux

In an article posted on LinuxPlanet, Wichert Ackerman states that Debian will include KDE versions based on GPL'ed Qt. It seems everybody seems happy with Qt under GPL ;-)

More on Qt

Trolltech and Qt have been getting some good press and support lately. The latest good news includes a strategic alliance with Loki to develop Linux applications. The LinuxToday article is here and the full announce here. KDE is also potentially a big winner because it is quite easy for application developers to provide a KDE-enhanced version of a Qt app.
