Nokia Releases Qt 4.7 with Qt Quick

Nokia has released Qt 4.7. It features some impressive performance improvements through hardware accelerated compositing in QtWebkit, a new text renderer and painting improvements on OpenGL. Notably Qt Quick is included, featuring the new QML (Qt Meta-Object-Language) language for writing programs based on outcomes. According to the release, QML is "an easy to learn, declarative language that ‘describes’ the interface of a program and how it behaves." Sources are available from the FTP server. Read More

KDE Imaging Group Meets in France

The team concentrated their efforts on refining and building upon this year's Google Summer of Code projects. digiKam had three GSoC projects this year: face detection and recognition by Aditya Bhatt, geotagging features by Gabriel Voicu and non-destructive image editing, and image versioning by Martin Klapetek. The results of this work will be included in the upcoming digiKam 2.0 version along with Kunal Ghosh's Season of KDE work—scripting support for digiKam. Of course, none of this work would have succeeded without the great mentors and digiKam developers, with whom the students could work side-by-side at the sprint: Marcel Wiesweg, Michael G. Hansen and Gilles Caulier. Read More

Ikhaya interviews Aaron Seigo about the Past, Present and Future of KDE

Help Test the Next Generation of KDE's Kontact

The KDE PIM team has made available a beta version of the next-generation groupware client suite Kontact. The new Kontact is built on the Akonadi framework, sharing infrastructure for syncing with online services across applications. While the first bits of Akonadi integration already made their entry in KAddressBook as delivered with 4.4, this beta includes Akonadi versions of most of the other Kontact components, including email using the new KMail2.
