Report from Successful Multimedia and Edu Sprint in Randa

Saturday, 19 June 2010  |  Frederik
43 persons (including organizers, designer, bugsquashers, and others) from 17 different countries gathered in Randa from Thursday 20 May to Tuesday 25 May. Why Randa? It is a marvelous place in the mountains of Switzerland where Mario Fux knew a house that would be perfect for KDE developers. Several groups that work on different parts of KDE had a chance to meet and mix in one house. Present were KDE-Education, Amarok, various multimedia people (Phonon, KMix, vlc) and Gluon developers. KDE Visits FOSS Nigeria Conference 2010

Wednesday, 16 June 2010  |  Frederik

Ibrahim Datsuma, one of our hosts
In 2010 the FOSS Nigeria Conference took place for the second time and, like last year, KDE attended the conference with two speakers. There was however a change in the visiting KDE team: Frederik Gladhorn joined Adriaan de Groot to take the place of Jonathan Riddell who could not make it this year. The venue for the conference was in Kano at the well-regarded Mambayya House, the Center for Democratic Research of the Bayero University. The conference date was moved from March to April, which meant that the weather presented a different face -- hot followed by rain instead of the harmattan.

Just like last year we were enthusiastically welcomed by Mustapha Abubakar, Ibrahim Datsuma and Jibril Muhammad. We arrived late at night so our first impressions were of higher temperatures, in comparison to last year, and a ride through the hot and dark night to reach the first hotel of our stay.

Second Beta for KDE SC 4.5 Available for Testing

Wednesday, 9 June 2010  |  Sebas
KDE today announced the immediate availability of KDE SC 4.5 Beta2. Quoting the announcement: Over the last two weeks, roughly since the first beta, 1459 new bugs have been reported, and 1643 bugs have been closed, so we're witnessing a lot of stabilization activity right now. More testing is in place, however, while the restless developers continue to create a rock-stable 4.5.0.
Well, that looks promising, but more of that testing (and helping us fix issues!) is needed. So here is another snapshot for you to grind your teeth in.
The usual boilerplate applies as well: This release does not meet production quality requirements and should be regarded as testing ground. Read More

Join the KDE Game at Linuxtag 2010

Monday, 7 June 2010  |  Sebas
This year, like every year, KDE will be present at Linuxtag, which is held from 9th to 12th in Berlin. As usual, visitors will be able to meet KDE contributors, chat about KDE and KDE-related topics, get a demonstration of the newest hotness that will be released as part of KDE SC 4.5.0 this summer, learn about the background of the KDE community and the technology it creates and of course just catch up with what's going on in KDE-land -- and that's a lot! Vote for your favorite
As part of our our efforts to better use our brands, we announced a set of labels for use by people creating KDE software. We chose three options: Powered by KDE, Built on the KDE Platform and Part of the KDE Family and asked for artwork for badges and banners carrying these labels so that they could be used on websites or within applications.

We've received a number of excellent designs and now it is time to pick the best. The judging panel will include four members of the KDE promotion team and you.
