On Being Part of KDE
Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Stuart Jarvis
As part of the repositioning of the KDE brand we want to give authors of third party applications a phrase to describe their relationship with the KDE community. Some authors may wish to associate themselves with the KDE community, others simply to acknowledge that their application is built on the KDE Platform or uses KDE technology so it is likely that we will recommend a choice of phrases to be used to meet these differing needs.

Stuart Jarvis
You have probably heard of Nepomuk, the semantic desktop technology we've been shipping for a while as part of the KDE Platform. However, so far, you may not have noticed it really doing very much useful for you. So what is this thing called Nepomuk, what can it do for us now and what will it bring us in the future? We asked two of the driving forces behind Nepomuk, Stéphane Laurière and Sebastian Trüg of Mandriva, to tell us about the real Nepomuk features that are already available in KDE software and those that have been introduced with Mandriva Linux 2010.

KDE Software Compilation 4.3.4 Released: Codename "Cold"
Tuesday, 1 December 2009
|
Sebas
KDE SC 4.3.4's codename "Cold" refers to the feature freeze, KDE's development tree is currently in. This Thursday will see the first beta of KDE SC 4.4, bringing significant improvements to the KDE development platform, the Plasma desktop and the individual applications shipped with KDE SC 4.4.
The current release is one of those monthly releases the KDE team ships to provide the users with bugfixes to the stable series. KDE SC 4.3.4 will most likely be the last release of the 4.3 series as KDE has now entered the stabilization period for 4.4, which is to be released in early February 2010. All hands are needed on deck to make KDE SC 4.4 a stable successor to the 4.3 series. Head over to the official announcement or the (probably incomplete) changelog for further information.

Einar
Early on in the lifetime of the KDE Community Forums, the staff launched regularly-held courses for people willing to help KDE called "Klassrooms". For each of these courses, a mentor (usually a KDE contributor, but not limited to them) guided a group of "students" towards a simple, definite goal that would improve KDE, for example fixing simple bugs in an application. However, the courses were not limited to coding: documentation, promo and other important areas were handled as well.
