KDE On Windows Continues

Monday, 8 June 2009  |  Pspendrin
After Christian Ehrlicher announced that he would step down from packaging and bug fixing for KDE on Windows, some articles were written which suggest that KDE on Windows is on hold now that the main developer has moved on. Even though KDE on Windows is only a small project and the loss of one developer will be felt, we are far from dead. The Windows port has not been a one-man-project and many other people are still involved. KDE on Windows will continue to be developed and packages will continue to be made. Read More

Amarok 2.1 "Let There Be Light" released

Thursday, 4 June 2009  |  Nightrose

After 5 months of hard work the Amarok team is proud to announce the next major release, Amarok 2.1, codenamed "Let There Be Light".

Since the release of 2.0 we have gotten a lot of feedback and have already integrated some of it in 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. This new release includes a new look, many improvements, new features and brings back old favorites. The playlist can now be customized to only show the information you care about, matching the way you use Amarok. The layout of the Context View was changed, while navigation and applet management has been made easier. We added support for Amarok URLs to make it easier to share that crazy rock song you just found on Jamendo. You can now bookmark track positions, allowing you to save a part of a song for later or letting you start your audio book where you left off.

KDE 4.2.4 a.k.a. CornRow Released

Tuesday, 2 June 2009  |  Sebas
The KDE Release Machine seems unstoppable these days! Today brings you KDE 4.2.4, the monthly update to the 4.2 series of KDE. KDE 4.2.4 is the recommended update for all those using KDE 4.2, or rather anything in the KDE 4 series. Those that stayed away from KDE 4 until now might give it a whirl as well to see if KDE 4 is up to their tasks. As it currently looks like the KDE team wants to fully concentrate on rock-stabilizing the 4.3.0 release that's shaping up nicely in KDE's Subversion trunk, so likely there won't be a KDE 4.2.5. If no grave problems, such as security issues arise, KDE 4.2.4 is the last update to the KDE 4.2 series. Packages for your favorite Operating System will as usually arrive shortly, as we made the sources available to the packagers a bit earlier already. Read More

Thursday, 28 May 2009  |  Ingwa
koffice logo The KOffice team is extremely pleased to finally announce version 2.0.0 of KOffice. This release marks the end of more than 3 years of work to port KOffice to Qt 4 and the KDE 4 libraries and, in some cases, totally rewrite the engine of the KOffice applications.

Over the last few years, the KOffice team has reworked the framework into an agile and flexible codebase. Our intention was to increase integration between the components of KOffice, decrease duplication of functionality and ease maintenance and development of new features. Furthermore, new approaches to UI design and interacting with the user have been implemented to support the new capabilities.

The first openSUSE Community Week took place on the 11-17 May 2009 and as an important part of the distribution, the geeko-loving KDE community were actively involved.

Throughout the week we were busy packaging, triaging bugs and introducing new community members to these skills. The releases of KDE 4.3 Beta 1 and Amarok 2.1 Beta 2 kept the team busy fixing last minute compilation errors and replacing 4.2.3 in the KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop repository with 4.3 Beta 1 as we move towards openSUSE 11.2. KDE 4.2 continues to be available in the KDE:42 repository so if you haven't switched yet, we expect you want to help make 4.3 excellent!

Wednesday, 13 May 2009  |  Sebas
The first beta version of the new and shiny KDE 4.3 has been released. The list of new features and improvements is long and impressive as ever. There is a new tree view mode in System Settings, many cool new features, the desktop search becomes more visible to the user, and yet more polishing in user interfaces all over the place make using KDE more fun. Interesting infrastructural bits are the integration of geolocation services into Plasma and Marble, a couple of nice improvements for KAlarm, the notification icon for your calendar. Apropos, the calendar in the clock now shows you holidays. More work down there in the panel brings the option to have the panel cover windows, to accurately align your panel using the new spacer. While KDE 4.3 already looks nice and stable, the KDE team wants to shake out as many bugs as possible before KDE 4.3.0 will be released in late July.
Get in gear ready for test-driving KDE 4.3 and help us ironing out kinks for everybody's KDE pleasure. Read More
