Akademy 2008 to be Held in Belgium

The annual KDE World Summit, Akademy, has found a home for 2008 in the heart of Europe, Belgium. The event is the most important conference for the contributors of the KDE project and will be held from Saturday August 9th to Saturday 16th at the De Nayer Institute, an associated campus of the University of Leuven. There are three sub-events: a contributors conference, the KDE e.V. annual general assembly and a week long hacking session. Akademy offers a great opportunity to the community to discuss all issues face-to-face. We also look forward to the chance to mingle with all KDE enthusiasts who want to drop by.

In this week's KDE Commit-Digest: A security fix developed for KDM, covering KDE 3.3.0 to 3.5.7. A KioBrowser data engine, HDD monitor applet, and general layout work in Plasma. More refinements in Parley (formerly KVocTrain). GeoData subproject in Marble to support popular geographic data formats. An AI player added to Kombination. Development renewed on the KPicross game. Basic printing support in Gwenview. Improved mimetype detection, as per the cross-desktop specifications. More work on text highlighting in Kate. Continued developments and optimisations in Akonadi, including the OpenChange (Exchange) connector. Further work on the GStreamer Phonon backend. Colourspace work in Krita, greater definition given to KChart2. File management part in Konqueror is replaced by a shared Dolphin part usage. More KDE SVN reorganisations.

Topics covered include the three scheduled developer meetings of the quarter (for Akonadi, ODF, and Oxygen) and reports from the Marketing Working Group, Human Computer Interaction Working Group, and System Administration Team. All long term KDE contributors are welcome to join the KDE e.V.

A few weeks ago the APress title Foundations of Qt Development left the printing presses. The book introduces Qt in a step by step fashion, but also delves into most areas of the toolkit. The highlights include an in-depth look at the model/view classes, as well as introductions to all the tools and widgets needed to get started. The publishers were kind enough to send KDE Dot News a copy of the book, read on for a short review.

At Ars Technica, my colleague Ryan Paul has posted about KDE 3.5.6 now being able to run on the Nokia 770 and 800 tablets. If you want to get it up and running, check out the original forum post by "penguinbait" over at Internet Table Talk which gives the complete steps required in greater detail. The main drawback for these systems compared to full computers is the total memory available (64MB or 128MB), fortunately KDE runs quite nicely on these low memory systems nonetheless.
