A release candidate of Ark Linux 2005.2 has been released, featuring KDE 3.5 Beta 1. Ark Linux is a very KDE centric desktop Linux distribution, aimed at making Linux easily usable to everyone while remaining technically sane. Aside from the move to KDE 3.5, this release features even more KDE integration including OpenOffice.org KAddressBook integration, and the usual round of speedups and bugfixes.

The Scribus Team is pleased to announce the release of Scribus 1.3.1, Unité. The 1.3.1 release is the second development version towards a new stable 1.4. This release brings new features never before available in any open source application including enhanced spot colour printing, intelligent colour wheel, in-line graphics, variable page sizes and ICC colour support. There has also been work towards Cairo support and a native Windows version and an initial MacOS X native build is available.

With over 700 attendees and a speaking track packed full of goodies, the one-day Ohio Linux Fest held this past Saturday in the city of Columbus was an unqualified success. KDE had a booth at the event which was kept exceedingly busy the entire day. Most of the people who visited the booth mentioned that they use KDE and several asked that we pass on their appreciation to the entire KDE team for all the work that they have put into it over the years.

KDE's legal body KDE e.V. held its Annual General Meeting at aKademy 2005 last month. Notes from the meeting are now available. A new board was chosen voting in Cornelius Schumacher and Aaron Seigo, and continuing Mirko Böhm and Eva Brucherseifer. Our thanks to the retiring board members Matthias Kalle Dalheimer and Harri Porten. The meeting decided to create working groups to streamline KDE development and activity, notes from the meeting discussing working groups are also available. KDE e.V. is currently discussing how these groups will form and they will be announced soon. All long term KDE contributors are encouraged to become KDE e.V. members.

Newsforge: KDE 4 Promises Radical Changes to the Free Desktop

Tom Chance discusses the developments happening in KDE 4 on Newsforge. He looks at the Appeal group which brings artists and usability experts together with developers at the earliest stages of development, the context linking platform Tenor and the ideas coming together for the KDE 4 desktop Plasma. He also looks at RuDI, a library which would help ISVs integrate with KDE. "All of these innovations, if completed, will make KDE an even better desktop environment. When next year's aKademy rolls around, it will be interesting to see what kind of progress has been made."
