KDE 3.4.2 has been released. This is the second translation and bugfix release to the 3.4 series, it includes all security updates to date, numerous minor fixes and improved translations including a new Afrikaans translation pack. See the 3.4.2 Release Announcement for full details and the changelog for a full list of updates. If you want to test KDE 3.4.2 there is a new version of the Klax Live CD. Every year, during the summer holidays, I regularly download the source code of the new version of KDE desktop that's in the works and compile it, test it and help with translation into Slovenian language. The KOffice team today announced the first bugfix release of the 1.4 series. Among various bugfixes and translation improvements, the KOffice 1.4.1 release further improves support for the OASIS OpenDocument file format. More changes are listed in the changelog. Binary packages for Kubuntu, Mandriva and SUSE have been contributed and the KOffice Live-CD has been updated. Read More

After five weeks intensive work in Romania Quanta's main developer Andras Mantia together with Jens Herden finished the first major step of Quanta's port to the KDevelop framework. Being able to get this result in a relative short time was only possible because of the excellent framework provided by the KDevelop project and the support of KDE e.V.. Read More

A year and a half after launching the KDE.OpenOffice.org Integration Project, the KDE plugin with the Native Widget Framework has become part of the official OpenOffice.org development packages. Developer snapshot m118 is the first of the towards-2.0 milestones that contains it. Read More

Two security advisories have been issued this week. The first affects Kate and KWrite as shipped with KDE 3.2.x up to including 3.4.0: backup files are created during saving with default permissions, even if the original file had more strict permissions set. The second affects Kopete as included in KDE 3.2.3 up to including KDE 3.4.1: the included copy of libgadu, if installed, can lead to integer overflows and remote DoS or arbitrary code execution. KDE 3.4.1 is the first modern desktop environment being compiled, packaged and working fully on the OpenSolaris platform. The work has been mainly done by our friend Stefan Teleman. While KDE is known to compile out of the box on Solaris with GCC, using the Sun ONE Studio 10 Compiler still presents a challenge which requires a lot of patches.
