Two distinct efforts with the goal of making KDE applications run on MS Windows are progressing: The Qt 3/Windows Free Edition project announced a binary release of their native Win32 port of the GPL'ed Qt 3.3.4/X11 sources. And the KDE on Cygwin staff released a first snapshot of KDE 3.4.1 for use with the Cygwin POSIX emulation layer and the Cygwin XFree86 server.

Nokia Develops Browser Based on KHTML

In a press release today, Nokia announced a new web browser in the works for the Series 60 application platform. The interesting tidbit about the browser is that it is based on Apple's WebKit which is of course based on KDE's very own KHTML (wp) rendering engine. KDE is fully acknowledged in Nokia's announcement. Update: Roland Geisler, Head of Strategy for the Series 60 Browser at Nokia, wrote to the Konqueror mailing list.

Trolltech has announced the Qt 4 release candidate, the final preview of next generation Qt. The final release of Qt 4.0 is scheduled for late June until which Trolltech will focus on addressing critical stability issues only. This release introduces several new features and capabilities including completely refreshed and re-engineered Qt demos and examples. Commercial offers were restructured into Qt Console for non-GUI development, Qt Desktop Light replacing the Professional and Qt Desktop comparable to Enterprise editions. Since KDE migrated to Subversion, I have been creating semi-weekly development builds in the hopes of finding bugs to report. Notable new features include Konqueror's new adblocking mechanism and Kicker's new applet manager. Since everyone likes screenshots, I created two articles with screenshots from my observational usage: previews of KDE's trunk code and Trolltech's Qt 4 alongside brief documentation of what one is looking at.

Apple Opens WebKit CVS and Bug Database

Today, Apple Computer announced the immediate availability of the WebKit Open Source Project. It includes full access to the CVS of WebKit as well as an open bug database. "We're looking forward to working more closely with KDE and the rest of the open source community" said Safari developer Maciej Stachowiak. KHTML developer Dirk Müller added "We're happy to see the development of WebCore opening up to the public, so that KDE can benefit from work that has been done in the WebCore fork of KHTML". WebKit is the system framework used by the Safari web browser, Dashboard and other Mac OS X applications. It contains WebCore and JavaScriptCore, the Apple forks of KHTML and KJS, the KDE JavaScript implementation.
