KDE-Files.org Launched

KDE's latest community website KDE-Files.org has gone online. The site is a central exchange platform for all sorts of documents and document templates. Users can collaborate, discuss, vote and share documents. Some examples of files you could share are your jogging result spreadsheets, OpenOffice.org presentation templates or Kexi DVD Databases. In the future users will be able to use the KHotNewStuff system to access KDE-Files.org directly from the applications. Read More

digiKam adds an image refocus plugin. DjVu support added to KViewShell. Konqueror file manager can view Subversion repositories. Konqueror supports AdBlock. amaroK gains Zeroconf support for Shoutcast, and begins initial work on multi-engine service discovery. K-Menu now has a search field.

KStars Donates Prize Money to KDE

Earlier this year KStars won the QtForum.org programming contest. Well the KStars developers decided the best thing to do with their money was to donate it to KDE. The US$1500 prize money is one of the largest donations to KDE e.V. to date. KDE e.V.'s budget mostly goes towards legal fees and travel costs for allowing developers to attend conferences. NewsForge: KSpread, OO.org Calc and Gnumeric Compared

NewsForge's contributor Bruce Byfield wrote a hands-on comparison between KSpread 1.3.5, OpenOffice.org Calc beta build 1.9.83 and Gnumeric 1.4.3-6. Seems like KSpread is doing pretty well - the charting capabilities were second to none, and reviewer mentioned KSpread to be a good choice for people making visual presentations. KSpread still needs love and care as handling lists was found to be limited. Read More

KDE PIM Developers and OpenUsability on Cooperation

The folks from Newsforge are covering some of the recent cooperation between the usability folks from OpenUsability and the KDE PIM developers. PIM developers Cornelius Schumacher and Till Adam along with Ellen Reitmayr from OpenUsability talked about some of the usability that stemmed from the KDE PIM usability review which started at aKademy last year. Many of these changes are already visible in KDE 3.4. They also discuss some of the challenges that had to be overcome to make it possible for the teams to cooperate and some of the things that the future has in store for usability work inside of KDE. LWN.net: KOffice Heads Toward 1.4

LWN has reviewed the recent KOffice 1.4 beta. They look at the existing applications in the suite and the new additions of image editor Krita and database manager Kexi. The conclusion is that "the KOffice 1.4 release will be a significant move forward for KOffice". David Faure has also commented on the file incompatibility (non-subscriber copy) issues mentioned in the article. Read More
