Kiss GStreamer Video Player

As part of the GStreamer invasion of KDE, Ronald Bultje has implemented Kiss, a simple version of a Totem-like video player for KDE with a GStreamer-backend (screenshot). I took a look at the source code and it looks fairly simple -- it's actually 23K worth of well-separated code in all, with the other 2.8M being makefile/configure overhead. Even if one doesn't understand the GStreamer parts, you could probably copy and paste them into your own KDE application. (Incidentally, this application seems to have been made with KDevelop, for those of you who need inspiration.) Read More

KDE 3.3.2 Released

The KDE project announced the availability of KDE 3.3.2, a maintenance release for the latest generation of the most advanced and powerful Free Software desktop for GNU/Linux and other UNIXes. KDE 3.3.2 ships with lot of bug fixes since KDE 3.3.1 and is available in 52 languages (now including Afrikaans and Galician). A Note From the Author of aRts

In a recent post to kde-core-devel Stefan Westerfeld, author of the KDE multimedia framework aRts, announced that he would no longer be maintaining it. He has written a note on further development of aRts explaining some of the problems with aRts' design decisions. aRts was a pioneering system and a major help in bringing multimedia to Free Software, thanks to Stefan for making it happen.
