PyKDE API Forges Ahead with Plugin Support

Friday, 7 November 2003  |  Jbublitz
The latest release of PyKDE (3.8.0) includes the ability to write KDE panel applets completely in Python -- absolutely no C++ required. This is the first in what's planned to be a number of extensions for PyKDE that allow plugins and related objects to be created entirely in Python; David Boddie is nearing release of modules for authoring KParts for export (PyKDE already imports KParts), KDE Control Center modules, and IOSlaves. Quickies: Linus Praises KDE, I-Kubed, Boson 0.9

Friday, 7 November 2003  |  Numanee
Andreas Beckermann wrote in to point out the huge amount of progress in the latest release of Boson (0.9), a real time strategy game for KDE. Screenshots here. Right after the beta announcement, KDE user illogic-al submitted his personal preview of KDE 3.2 on I-Kubed.org. It's been noted that there may be inaccuracies in the review -- but can you feel the excitement?! Finally, several of you also wrote in to point out Linus Torvalds' comments on KDE in a recent interview on OET: "I think the biggest single thing that has happened [...] has been a lot of good library frameworks. Qt in particular I think made a huge difference. And the KDE libraries and toolbuilder infrastructure. [...] I just noticed that the KDE people consider it more important to have it working, and sane.
I don't get involved very much. I used to send a lot of bug reports to the KDE people, until I didn't have bugs anymore and I stopped."
Thanks, Linus! Read More

KDE on Television Show 24

Friday, 31 October 2003  |  Jriddell
The third series of television show 24 started in the US last week. In the aim to improve security, The Counter Terrorist Unit seem to have switched operating system from MacOS to KDE. Interestingly they used a 3-year-old KDE 1.x desktop. These older icons are made available under a public domain licence. If a GPL'd set of icons had been used, would we now be legally able to modify, sell and distribute the episode under the terms of the GPL over the internet? Read More
