For its September 2003 issue, Linux Magazine has interviewed several KDE developers, resulting in two feature stories. Both are available online in PDF format. The first, titled "Sneak Preview" deals with the KDE Contributor Conference 2003 ("Kastle") and summarizes the developers' personal plans for the conference and what they expect as an outcome of the hacking festival. In "Hidden but sooo useful" several KDE tips and tricks are revealed by the developers.

Evans Data: Linux Developers Prefer KDE

A recent study prepared by Evans Data concluded that KDE is the preferred desktop environment amongst Linux developers. 65% of the 600 surveyed said that they currently use KDE, against 56% for GNOME. Nicholas Petreley, Evans Data's Linux analyst, said "It is also interesting to note that KDE has taken a statistically significant lead in use and deployment after running neck and neck with GNOME for the past three years."

The Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (Opie) project is pleased to announce its first 1.0 release. Having been forked from Trolltech™'s Qtopia™ environment (version 1.7 of which was also released today), Opie has emerged as the most sophisticated free and open graphical user interface for Linux-based embedded devices and PDAs. KDE users will recognize familiar artwork and applications such as Konqueror/Embedded running on it. Synchronisation with KDE 3.1 is possible with KitchenSync.

The KDE Project announced
KDE 3.1.3 today. It's the third maintenance release of the successful KDE 3.1.x series and
ships with many bugfixes and improved translations. KDE 3.1.3 also contains a fix for a possible HTTP authentication leak
in the HTTP referrer header. Users of KDE 3.x are advised to upgrade to KDE 3.1.3. Read the change log or directly jump to the

After a long phase of testing and bugfixing, Kolab, the result of the Kroupware project, has finally been announced. Kolab is a groupware solution that offers email, group calendaring, notes and tasks. Kolab Server is available as 1.0, the KDE Kolab Client is provided in an improved 1.0.1 version. Additionally, the Kolab Server can also be used with Microsoft Outlook™. This makes it an ideal tool for migrations to the GNU/Linux platform.
