Google Summer of Code 2013 (GSoC) brought fifty budding new shoots and branches to the mighty KDE family tree, and the canopy of warmth and love offered by the community helped them blossom and bloom in the three months of the program. With a few snips, a little trimming and pruning, they have learned, innovated, created and contributed to one of the largest free and open source communities in the world, and have developed software that will touch many people around the world. The KDE Community makes software; most of the people in the Community are software developers. However, this large and extensive community includes more than just the people who write software. Among the many non-technical contributors there are translators, bug finders and fixers, writers, promoters, and those who provide user support. User support is critical to KDE's success, because it provides a way for technical issues to be properly reported to people who can do something about them. Read More

  • KDevelop adds a new tool: RegistersView
  • In KDE-PIM, KMail gains adblock support
  • Krita adds an option to hide preset strip and/or scratchpad; improves memory efficiency and conversions
  • Porting to KDE Frameworks and Plasma 2 still in progress, this includes the icon applet; porting to Qt 5 is also in progress for the KCM modules
  • Work is in progress on systemtray 2.

  • Krita gains Clones Array extension: it creates a number of clones for the current layer, so the user can paint on it as if the tiles were repeated (useful for painting texture tiles for web-games); implements the Select Layer by Mouse Click feature and shows brush outline in line tool (and other tools)
  • Skrooge downloads and adds bills as properties by using boobill (weboob)
  • KDE-PIM adds a migration agent that schedules various migrators and exposes an interface for status and control
  • Bug fixes in Amarok, Calligra and many other programs.

ezgo - Free And Open Source Software In Taiwan's Schools

Free and Open Source Software in Taiwan has made impressive strides thanks to the work of the 'ezgo' team. They have put together a pre-configured set of Free and Open Source (FOSS) software that makes it easy for teachers and students to get up and running. The New Taipei City government has decided to install ezgo 11 on 10,000 PCs for elementary schools, bringing thousands of students in contact with Linux, KDE and educational Free Software. The ezgo team has written up an account of ezgo and how it came to be. Read More

  • Skrooge adds new categories and account types
  • KDE-PIM has a new interface for migrators
  • KDevelop improves usage of threads in the interface
  • KDE Telepathy adds support for KPeople to LogViewer, this allows (among others) browsing history of entire personas instead of individual contacts
  • Kte-collaborative sees work on an overlay layer: on opening a document, displays an overlay over the view which indicates connection and synchronization progress
  • Optimizations in KDE Frameworks, Amarok and others.

  • Dolphin prevents interface freezes if there are many files inside a directory or if directory access is slow for other reasons
  • KWin 4.11.2 improves memory footprint if color correction is disabled.

The changes to KDE's core libraries are enough to warrant a name change from 'Platform' to 'Frameworks'.
