KDE Ships March Updates to Plasma Workspaces, Applications and Platform

KDE has released updates for its Workspaces, Applications and Development Platform. They are the first in a series of monthly stabilization updates to the 4.10 series. 4.10.1 updates bring many bugfixes and translation updates on top of the 4.10 release and are recommended for everyone running the initial 4.10 release. Plasmate 1.0: A Plasma Workspaces SDK

The Plasma Workspaces team is excited to announce the first stable release of Plasmate: an add-ons SDK that focuses on ease of use.

Plasmate follows the UNIX philosophy of "do one thing, and do it well". As such, it is not a general purpose IDE but rather a tool specifically tailored to creating Plasma Workspace add-ons using non-compiled languages such as QML and Javascript. It guides each step in the process, simplifying and speeding up project creation, development, adding new assets, testing and publishing. The goal of Plasmate is to enable creating something new in seconds and publishing it immediately.

  • KDevelop adds basic support for type-defined function pointers; introduces fast documentation access; improves performance by caching the hash of indexed set nodes
  • KWin adds a new effect: Glow on approaching Screen Edge; Non-composited Outline is ported to XCB
  • Marble can now open .kmz files
  • Calligra adds an ability to transform layers recursively with a Transform Tool
  • Marble sees work on a plugin to draw polygons and placemarks on a map
  • Skrooge shows buttons on dashboard widgets to discover the contextual menu.

Akademy and Qt Contributors Summit Join Forces

In July 2013, Akademy — the KDE community summit — will host the Qt Contributors Summit (QtCS) in Bilbao, Spain. QtCS is THE gathering of the Qt Project contributor community. It will take place July 15th and 16th in the middle of the KDE Akademy week (13-19 July). By co-hosting, KDE and the Qt Project will increase their existing collaboration even further. Holding their annual conferences at the same time and the same place will foster interaction, knowledge transfer and technical progress. Read More

Calligra 2.6: Features, Usability, Bugfixes

The Calligra team has announced the release of version 2.6 of the Calligra Suite, Calligra Active and the Calligra Office Engine. This version provides new features, substantial usability polishing, and bugfixes. Calligra is seeing a lot of development, so many new features are mentioned in the announcement, and the applications are becoming more and more mature.
