Michel Ludwig on Kile, KDE Platform 4 and Git
After investigating the work being done on KBibTeX a few months ago, we turn our attention to Kile, KDE's LaTeX and TeX editor. LaTeX is a document markup language and document preparation system built on top of the typesetting system TeX. It is frequently used for scientific publications as an alternative to word processors.

KWin Embraces New Platforms with OpenGL ES 2.0 Support
Over the last few months the KWin development team worked on bringing the Window Manager for KDE's Plasma workspaces to mobile devices. This has required porting the compositing code to OpenGL ES 2.0, the open graphics API for programmable embedded graphics hardware. With the migration of KWin's codebase to git, the code was imported into the master development tree to be part of the next release of the KDE Platform.

KDE Commit-Digest for 16th January 2011
In this week's KDE Commit-Digest:
- This week, the KDE developers are again heavily focusing on readying the soon-to-be-released KDE Software Compilation 4.6
- Bug fixes can be found throughout the stack and in a wide range of applications
- Many bug fixes are going into extragear applications such as Amarok, the KDE Development stack, and KDevelop itself, as well as into KDE-PIM and the KDE office suites
- There are also a number of optimizations in various areas
- Few and rather small features are added to else where in KDE software, mainly in Marble, Calligra, and the graphics applications
- RSIBreak is preparing for release.

- Cantor’s Qalculate backend is improved

- Marble sees improvements to the "Postition Marker" configuration dialog, gets "Earthquake" and "Overview Map" configuration dialogs and a planet option for the map creation wizard
- Bug fixes to Plasma and its applets, KDE PIM, Phonon, and Amarok
- Bug fixes to KIO Slaves and a large fix for the implementation of KIO Slaves in Rekonq
- The table of contents generator in Calligra Words is improved
- Improvements are made to Office Open XML format importing in Calligra
- KMyMoney gets an improved .csv file importer
- Skrooge can import Money Manager EX files
- Work is done on action editor for Krita
- KPlato is renamed to Calligra Plan and gets more view options and other improvements to Gantt charts
- A prototype mobile version of Kexi is introduced
- Cirkuit supports GHNS
- Kamoso supports Nepomuk and more webcams
- Apper, formerly known as KPackagekit, gets a single KDE Control Center Module for its settings and its updater and gains an option to stop checking for updates when on battery power
- Nepomuk’s performance is improved
- The majority of KMail is ported to the KConfigXT architecture
- Rekonq gains a user agent switcher
- Kiosk gets bug fixes for application compatibility and a feature for file browsing restrictions
- TagLib now has full read/write support for FLAC files
- GStreamer becomes the preferred Phonon backend and is able to install plugins automatically
- The Oxygen 16x16 mimetype icons are finished
- The Akonadi KDE system tray, KAlternatives and Krusader move to Git.

Runa Bhattacharjee is a translator for KDE and other projects who works for Red Hat. Her talk on Traditional Hues and Technology will look at the way culture is being changed by computers and the significant impact open source is having on this process.
Camp KDE 2011 Announced
We are excited to announce Camp KDE 2011 which will be held April 4 and 5, 2011 in San Francisco, California at the Hotel Kabuki. Camp KDE is co-located this year with the Linux Foundation's Collaboration Summit which takes place April 6 and 7.
