PC-BSD Interview

PC-BSD is one of the newest additions to the BSD family. The focus for this project is to create a user-friendly desktop experience based on FreeBSD and it has quickly garnered attention from media and the community. Kris Moore founder and lead developer of PC-BSD took some time off to answer a few questions about the past and current state of the project in general and its relation to KDE in particular.

Can you tell us about the history of your distribution?


Ark Linux 2006.1 Released with KDE 3.5.4

The Ark Linux team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the KDE centric desktop distribution Ark Linux 2006.1 - including KDE 3.5.4, Amarok 1.4.1, Kopete 0.12.1 with a hotfix for connecting to ICQ after the latest protocol change, a fully KDE-ified OpenOffice.org 2.0.3, and X.org 7.1.1.


KDE and Distributions: SabayonLinux

Sabayon Linux is quite a new addition to the family of KDE distributions. It first came into existance on the Gentoo Forums as RR4/RR64 and was designed to provide a fast and easy way to get a Gentoo system with extras. After the inital success, founder and developer Fabio Erculani decided to turn this project into a fully fledged distribution. It was also decided that a new name was needed and thus SabayonLinux was born. Fabio Erculani talks about the past, current status and the future of SabayonLinux.

Kubuntu 6.06 LTS Here for the Long Term

KDE based distribution Kubuntu 6.06 LTS has been released. It is available for download now or for the first time you can order free Kubuntu CDs through Shipit. This release comes with KDE 3.5.2 (packages for 3.5.3 are available) and includes a new installer which you can use direct from the live desktop CD.


KDE to Become Better Supported on the Ubuntu Platform

At LinuxTag on Saturday, a meeting of Kubuntu and KDE contributors was held in order to improve the collaboration of both projects. The aim was to to talk about the common future of both projects. Jonathan Riddell and Mark Shuttleworth from Canonical attended the meeting. Later in his keynote speech to the conference, Mark publicly committed to Kubuntu as an essential product for Canonical and showed his commitment by wearing a KDE t-shirt.

Distro Quickies: Tomahawk, QiLinux, Arabian and Kubuntu

A few of the KDE distributions have been sending us their annoucements. Tomahawk Desktop 1.1 has been released. "Tomahawk Desktop is an advanced multimedia centric KDE desktop". *** QiLinux 2.0rc1 free edition was released with KDE 3.5.2, "QiLinux is a KDE-centric distribution for desktop and server made completely from scratch".


Ark Linux 2006.1-rc1 Released with KDE 3.5.1

KDE distribution Ark Linux has released the first release candidate of version 2006.1. It includes the latest KDE 3.5.1, OpenOffice.org 2.0.2 with full KDE integration and Xorg 7.0. Starting with this version, Ark Linux uses amaroK 1.4 Beta as its default music player. KOffice 1.5 Beta is also part of this release with Krita as the graphics editor.
