I'm very sorry to let everyone know that Uwe Thiem, a long term contributor to KDE, passed away yesterday at 14:45 of kidney failure. Uwe was one of the longest contributors to the KDE family and was one of the original members of the core development team. He moved on to become the main KDE representative in Africa. Uwe was one of the first people to write a book on KDE development, which helped many people who have become regular contributors today, and was still writing about KDE last week. Aaron Seigo spoke for us all when he said "Uwe had a deep love for and belief in Africa and the role that technology can, and should, play on that continent. He put his back into it and was a great advocate for Free software in his area of the world". Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this irreplaceable loss, we are all a little less than we were yesterday.

He loved scifi, we shared a love for Ursula K. LeGuin, for Linux, for KDE.
We exchanged a bazillion emails, arguing about anything, from the ideal temperature for human beings (27C, IIRC) to how just puting meat over a fire was the most natural kind of meal, and about how he loved cats but couldn't be around one because of his allergies, and his family, and mine, and ...

The sad news of Uwe Thiem's passing makes me think of the unexplained disappearance of some other prominent KDE contributors, including Sonnet developer Jacob Rideout (http://dot.kde.org/1183388210/1183406251). Does anyone know what happened to him?
Yes, I do know what happened to Jacob, and it is not sad or terrible. Rest easy on that issue; I will respect Jacob's silence on the matter, though.

Uwe Thiem's name was one of the first names I learned to know when I got involved with the KDE project (e.g. Uwe was the creator of KFract and I knew him from the mailing lists where he was very active during the early time of KDE development). And he certainly contributed to the spirit that attracted me to this project.
I've admired and appreciated his level-headed and insightful mails and like others I feel disappointed that I never learned to know him in person.
It's a sad day for KDE and for the world we live in now that we've lost somebody like Uwe.
It's interesting Torsten said pretty much what I was thinking. In fact the decision process I had to make when Quanta split early on was really about the moraility of free software, which I think was in some part a reflection of Uwe's influence. Having worked my way back from a high mortality health condition a few years ago I had time to consider my legacy. Contributing to a project that empowers people around the world is a wonderful thing to leave behind.
Many of us probably don't realize just how much Uwe Thiem influenced those who played a part in programs we use every day. In fact his last article should still be influencing us today... It is indeed a sad day.

He was quite active within the Gentoo lists as well, and when I started out with it I found I didn't need to post much because Uwe had already answered quite a bit. Just little nuggets here and there.
Uwe's one of those rocks where you think "What's going to happen now?" when he's not around.

Uwe contributed so much, no just to KDE but in his community, his loss will be immeasurable. Two strong voices for Free software lost in one week.
Might I suggest the codename for the final 4.1 release be something appropriate to pay tribute to Uwe?
