If you did not heed our warning from six months ago and are still using KMail < 1.0.29.1 (from KDE 1.x), you are advised to please upgrade to KDE 2.2 (or KDE 2.1.x) immediately. In about a week the bizarre KMail 1,000,000,000th second bug will strike, which can cause corruption of your mail folders. Details about the bug are available here.
The KMail developers recommend that users update to KDE 2.2, which includes a newer KMail with many other bugs fixed and many new features. According to KMail developer Daniel Naber,
The new version of KMail will use old mail files without problems.
However, once the new version is installed one should not switch back to
the old version because of changes in the index files and configuration
file. Just to be sure, we recommend that users make a backup of their mail
folder (~/Mail) and compress all folders before switching to the new
version.

Wow! For 6 months I've been unable to send email, and after searching Comcast help, and talking to friends who I thought knew a thing or two about computers, I Googled 530 Authentication, and fixed it in 30 seconds. Thanks bcherry!
I live in the states and my error message is this;
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
I am having the same problem. (0x800CCC0F). It happened last week after several days of rain & then mysteriously corrected itself for 5 or 6 days & then reappeared yesterday when we had a little rain. Is this coincedental (that's my Guess) Please help John
I got stuck today with the 530 authentication deal. Thanks so much for the instructions below. They worked like a charm.

I just contacted comcast with the same problem here was there answer:
Outlook Express is designed for any email account, not specifically any one provider or type of account. Due to recent spam restrictions and changes to our server policies, third party email accounts can no longer send through our outbound email server

Thank you Thank you Thank you.
I am down in Oakland CA (from Oregon) working security for the garbage strike and haven't been able to email out. I went to all the servers helps etc and none of them would give me the answer to this 530 Authentivation BS. But this blog had me hitting the send button in seconds. Thank you
I get the same error with my ISP mail account
BTW it was working with KDE 2.2.1
Also Konqueror wants to connect to CVS all the time now, well I do not have CVS installed at all...
Any hacks?
thanks all in advance
puedo mandar unos mensajes y otros no me sale error 530.0x800cc79
there is allways a problem on yahoo launch wats up with that error 15 for da last time
thanxs kirsty
I got a problem kinda similar that said this:
Sending failed:
The server did not accept the sender address.
The server responded: "Invalid extension (mySurname) "
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
Note: Other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder
The following transport protocol was used:
www.ntlworld.com
I fixed it by:
Goto configure/identities
Now select your profile and click modify
You should now see your profile...
Select the General tab (if it isn't already selected)
Now to solve this enter an email address that you want the server to respond to.
That should do it, the problem was that the server needs an address to respond to should something go wrong and its also needed before any mail can be sent by the SMTP protocol.
I knew there was no problem with the ntlworld server because I could telnet into it by typing:
telnet smtp.ntlworld.com 25
From there I could send mail by following the command protocol (type HELP).
Anyway I hope this helped, what pissed me off was that KMail didn't explain this in simple terms for a newbie like me, so simple to sort too - just make the email address a pre-requisite for inbound SMTP accounts.
I also am getting the same error but in my case, I have my reply email in my General tab. What could be the issue?
lky
This message is already old, but I have the same type of problem.
I can send E-mails with KMail, but only without attachment.
With attachment the protocol types out as described in the previous message.
Was this problem solved?
Thanks
Henk
friends I don't know how to share the nice white mouse pointer with you all (KDE users), I am very happy that this mouse pointer increases the beauty of KDE somewhat. This is just a small gift to all of you nice people :)
If you don't have root previliges: copy this cursor.pcf.gz file to '~/.kde/share/fonts/override', and restart kde.
If you have root previledges the you can copy this 'cursor.pcf.gz' file to '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc' folder.
this mouse pointer I think should be the default mouse pointer of KDE shouldn't it be?
Hope you like my little contribution. And where should I put other mouse pointer I will create, eg. white-large, white-extra-large, black, black-large, and black-extra-large? Thanks!

You should subscribe to the KDE-Devel mailing list and send a mail asking if someone could add your cursors to KDE and make a control panel to change the cursor. Or, better yet, you could make the control panel yourself and send it in! The KDE developers love people who take the initiative themselves! It would be a good project to learn KDE development.

This makes me wonder: How do you at all make a 1.000.000.000 seconds bug ? If it were a 2^32 seconds bug or 2-to-the-power-of-some-other-figure I would understand. But 1.000.000.000 ?
Anyway; I have recently made KMail my default mail program (the IMAP support finally works) and I am really satisfied (so far ;-). Also: The coming unification of the implementation of KMail and KNews is really great news. Sometimes in the future that would be the foundation of a real KDE Outlook killer.
It's simple, take the number as a string, not as a number. Then limit the length of the string and it just won't fit anymore after 999.999.999. The reason you take it as a string is simply because you want to save it (in a non-binary way).
That seems pretty stupid, the c++ string allows any length. Bad programming- did the author not see his code being used in 2001? Can you say evolution?
it was due to the structure of the index files which only have space for 9 digits for the date (and therefore the problem when reading back in) and nothing to do with the code actually storing the date in kmail itself.
I dont't know whether we have a special fucked up version of Outlook here at work of whether I am to stupid, but this damn Outlook here sucks beyond believe.
Bye
Alex
That version is what microsoft likes to call "retail".
In my companies´ calendar there ist a meeting scheduled on
Sunday from 3:40AM to 3:50AM for all staff.
I wonder who´s gonna show up :-)
Knode-0.4 used to work great for me as a newsreader, I used to sort the articles by ascending order of date, but I just discovered that all articles from today (September 9, posted after 10^9 seconds) are above the oldest articles (if I change the order to descending, they are below the oldest articles): so it looks like knode-0.4 can't deal with this date either, so is this a known knode-0.4 bug? Is the current knode (the one that comes with 2.2) OK?
It's not a major bug, because most of my NG's are emptied after a few weeks, and then all articles are from after 10^9 and they are sorted correctly once again (BTW it's time to upgrade for me).
